Having just put in a new rad with electric fan and X-Eng thermostat wired all up as per diagram to a carling on/off/on switch and nothing is happening, would any sparks on here have a look at diagram and see whats wrong. the writing is mine for reference

Have you got 12V at the supply?

If you bridge the relay feed and output terminals, does the fan start up?

Where have you connect the earth return to?
If you bridge between what you have labeled as R1 and the supply to the fan from the relay. (The wire in the south position on the relay) the fan should kick in.

Have you connected the relay up correctly? Just worth checking.

Just looking at the operation of it, there is a 12v supply to the relay and the thermal switch, it has two modes so the hot running will kick in after the cold running. Say the cold running is selected, with the thermal switch made, the 12v will then be made to user selector switch at position R2, switched to cold this will then put a 12v through S1 to the East position of the relay. I'm guessing this will be the solenoid supply to make the relay close between the N and S postion. This will then allow the permanent 12v from the North position to activate the fan from the S position of the relay.

Hope this helps your fault diagnosis a little, correct me anyone if I'm wrong, may be a duff info.

The wiring should allow for me too switch it on and off manually as well as the thermostat.

I don't think there is any facility for manual control on this, if you did want it, a switch between R1 and the Easterly position on the relay will turn it on manually.

The relay i have has the same pin configuration, but the diagram does not give the pin numbers.

It'll all go off the northerly pin, it should be turned 90 degrees to the others like on the diagram, that is the load supply pin.

some progress, fan now works but stays on even if i take all the wires off the switch? going to have a look on Carling web site see if that helps.

Have you put the fan across the solenoid coil in the relay?

Sorry to sound dumb , what pins would that be? I have checked and checked again and i am sure it is wired as per the diagram. Could the relay be different to normal, it is a standard relay same as i have used for spots etc.

bit of progress, I took a direct feed from switch SW2 to relay, leaving two live feeds off. now I can switch on and off but don't know if it will kick in when it gets hot. From the diagram, apart from the relay earth and R2 from switch to thermostat, all the other wires are live being fed by R1 from the battery. To my mind there seems too many lives, going to give one more shot tomorrow then its a job for a sparks.
