Hi all I do this for a living but with busses....we take out the hydraulic fan system and design a rad/cac with cowel with 6-8 electric fans on. It has been saving 10-20% fuel.
The fans we use are quite expensive but they are so much more powerful than the crap you get off ebay...iv been thinking of designing somthing for a defender as a little side project...sounds like there might be a market for a proper system?

She got a new rad fitted a few months ago
I don't have a viscous fan to keep, I bought her with the electric fan so I can either buy a viscous or a second electric.. I think I will get another electric fan just to be on the safe side, got to be at least equal cooling power than 1 viscous and I can still have the benefit of not having a viscous while in the UK.

Yeah I think so mate, you want the extra cooling power for when it gets hot but the advantage of electric for cooler climates too..

No fan at all is needed when you are travelling at speed as the airflow is higher than the capability of a fan , the viscous will do the job when it gets slow in hot conditions , and is what was designed by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Electric fans need to be carefully matched to the CUftper minute of the original design , to be efficacious , otherwise in adverse conditions they will be found wanting and so will your wallet !! So unless you can do a proving run in the same conditions of temp and load , going with what you think will be OK here could prove otherwise when you hit it in Morocco JMHO
