Got a mate with a TD5 Disco 2 with problems on the cruise control. Having searched on here I found lot of recomendations about checking vacuum hoses etc, particularly under ns "battery" tray. Having told him this - he assures me that his cruise control is electric .
Can anyone shed a bit more light on this for both me and him - coz his is intermittent .

Would appear to be electrical

Most common intermitent failures with this are caused by >>> clutch switch, brake pedal switch, gear selector position switch, the SET/RES switch....or the switch itself or the wiring around there......be aware, before doing anything with the switch from the steering wheel disconnect main battery and wait 10 minutes. Another problem could be some bad contact within the ECM's black connector.

He seems to think it isnt getting the speed sensor info, and because of this it dont know the speed and therefore wont turn on.

That is easy to check......select ORM(i case it still has SLS) and accelerate.....if the speed info isnt working then the ORM will not deactivate when the speed exceedes 18mph. Anyway the speed signal is coming from the SLABS ECU inputed by an ABS sensor. The speed signal enters the cruise controll ECU pin 15 of C0239

Just found this useful site www.discovery2.co.uk A bar / Fitting Cruise Control To a Discovery 2 TD5

Apparently you can fit a Cruise control to all disco 2's as they already have the wiring in the steering wheel, All you need are the buttons for the wheel and the cruise contol swtich for the Dash, thats it once fitted, you've got cruise control without even going under the bonnet :D

Yup, bought the kit, fitted it, works great! A good upgrade. Really handy on long motorway/A-road journeys... It does "hunt" a bit on gentle downward slopes - but it does work fine overall.
