A Brit neighbour with a holiday home near us turned up yesterday. Not seen him for a long time, thought it was due to post BREXIT visa problems. Turned out it was car problems. He purchased a new VW id4 electric car last year to replace his Mitsubishi hybrid. After 10 months of it rarely being out of the dealers garage, they gave him his money back. He's now back running a diesel car!

Hi folks, confession time.
As the Dads Taxi costs were sky rocketing in the Range I had an opportunity to take on a Skoda full electric car. Getting home charging at 8 pence per KWh it costs less that £7.00 for a full charge. To date it’s saved me over £1,500 in petrol. No problems at all, as I won’t be keeping it long enough to worry about servicing (£500 for two years) I’m very pleased. Keeping the Range for recreational duties and relaxation.
Cheers Tricky
PS the finances to buy it don’t work and it’s no contest versus the range driving experience but saves a bundle at the pumps…!!!

I think they have their place and I love the way they produce torque, I also really like the Tesla Model S, I thought it was brilliant when it first came out and they are getting to a pretty good price point now too (especially if you can get one with the free super charging for life as it's the car not the owner). That said, I don't own one and I don't want one badly enough to do it.

Ideally, my wife should have a Nissan Leaf or something as it would be perfect for the sort of driving she does and it would save money but I can't see that she will ever be parted from her Disco 4 and who am I to argue? So we'll stick with our fleet of stupid Land Rovers and other V8s.

A colleague of mine has an MG electric thing and he says it's brilliant for the day to day stuff but (and this is something I'd never considered), the batteries are obviously very heavy so everything else is made a light as possible to aid with range etc. He tells me it's really noisy inside and feels flimsy too which is really disappointing. He's planning on moving to the Alps next year and has said it will be useless there so he'll be after a diesel 4x4 of some sort for then. I wonder if anyone can recommend anything to him? I will say I never noticed a flimsy feeling in my friend's Golf GTE when he had those but they're hybrids and not a pure electric anyway so probably not comparable.

4 x 4 for the Alps? Pajero or Land Cruiser would be my choice

We have an Mg5 and it's solid. It's one of the comfiest vehicles I've ever sat in.
Not quite a range rover as the seats aren't as big but they're very soft and supple.
Too many cars these days have really hard seats which I hate. I don't want to do the nurburgring I want to sit in an armchair doing 70mph.

Drive to Poole tomorrow in the range rover will be a delight.

My cousin had a Tesla and he loved it BUT the service costs started to become very pricey as only Tesla are allowed to do it. So it had to go. At least he still had the Ferrari FF and his Range Rover :D

Had my first drive of a electric car the other week, my girlfriends mum is in her 80's and has a Zoe she does not drive at night as eyes not what they where, we all went out and I got the job of driving, First thing range of around 200 km, my Mondeo say's at 180 km time to fill up, but only doing about 100 km so no problem, it had very little power, did not like going up hills, turns out girlfriends mum has not got problem with eyes, lights are ****, very little differents between high and low beam, and when we got back had about 65 km range left, this is the sort of electric car that most normal people will have to drive if electric cars are going to save the planet not f-150 lightnings

ZOE = Zero Output of Energy

Until you can pick a used one up for a couple of grand then electric cars will be out of reach for the poorer working man
They also wear tyres out quicker than yer diesel so not really better for the planet with all that black rubber dust spreading everywhere
I'd have one though if I could afford it :)

I think we all agree it’s probably better but we’re also being fed some miss truths a bit like the diesel economy figures of recent years.
Plus without 100% renewable energy it’s a scam anyway because the CO2 from fossil fuels is still being pumped out.
As cars they’re generally an awesome drive ( in a good one) but I smell fudged figures somewhere.

Overall, electric is very inefficient, all the voltage conversions from generator to home, all the line losses along the way and then at your house power has to be converted to DC to charge the battery and back to AC for the motor. Then you have the weight which consumes more fuel.

All this worrying about our emissions and in Ukraine / Russia there are large explosions 24/7 and huge fires burning polluting the air !!
It's so unnecessary and Mr Putin must be told to stop polluting the planet or else !!, One man is causing more damage to the planet than all of us put together, he's insane ffs

True, soon to be joined on the world stage by another nutter in the form of Trump. Then we have the mad Mullah's, Kim Jong Fat Boy and that Chinese bloke. The world is descending into madness.
