I've recently fitted a £3.95 EGR blanking plate to my TD5 manual Discovery and, considering the cost, the difference is quite phenominal. Acceleration is slightly more keen but, more importantly, fuel consumption has dropped dramatically. Normally, it costs me circa £80 to fill the tank and the reserve light comes on 540-560 miles later. Well, I've just used my first tank with the blanking plate fitted and the reserve light has just come on at 655 miles, bloody fantastic!

So to anyone thinking of fitting one of these, do it; easy to fit, cheap to buy and it will pay for itself within the first 1/3rd tank of diesel.

My only question to the experts is this: Do I have to remove it at MOT time so that it'll pass or can I leave it in situ?

Well, for 300tdi owners there isn't a problem, as most of these Disco 1 types were fitted with the blanking plate at manufacture (an EGR was only required for some overseas countries with more stringent emission laws than ours).

My Disco 1 has passed the MoT without any reference to the blanking plate.

Of course, I can't say for sure whether this is the same for the td5, but you have to hazard a guess that it would be the same.

i wonder how many 300tdi owners had a egr blanking plate fitted from factory as i don't know of any and trust me i have worked on a few of them in my time, has any of you guys had a factory fit egr, phil

well you live and learn as i thought the 300 tdi was desigined to the north american emmision regs therefore they had the egr system to comply, but there you go,phil

Mines a 98 and had the EGR system, but that didn't last long, was one of the first mods I did was rip the whole system out. Never looked back.

I've been sat here for the last hour reading everything I can find regarding this ERG blanking plate, and just been outside looking for where it goes.
I have an '03 TD5 ES Auto and the extra umff would come in handy, can anyone put some pics on or give me some clues as to where to fit it before I order one off evil bay.

Thanks

WOW THATS GOOD!

Led to believe that the TD5 was more thirsty than the 300tdi:confused:

I get 530 miles on 80 litres with a 1995 300tdi which has now blanked egr

Fitted the EGR removal kit today and also fitted a K&N (I have always used K&N for the past 20 years to every car Ive owned)....... WOW.....

I can now feel the turbo working!............ Bottom end power is transformed. It drives so much nicer without struggling. Throttle response is 100% better. I can now compare it to an old shogun LWB Ive also got…. (which goes like stink..! (EGR Blanked before I bought it (checked today…!))

Throttle response is as it "should have been....from the factory!"

Not that its made for speed, but I always found the Disco struggling on the motorway – I can now accelerate in 5th at 70 without having to floor it!

The best way to explain the difference is how my wife described it “it feels like it can now breath”

Just filled her up to the brim to see what the mileage is like........

P.S it’s a 2003 Disco II face lift

P.P.S before I fitted the EGR removal kit the car was 100% ok – no black smoke – it just felt throttled to me (we have only had it a few weeks)

regards the egr why bother with a blanking plate why not just unplug the elec connec i did and mine is so much better at no cost at all and come mot time if its needed then just plug it back on

Beacause if it's never been cleaned the whole inlet side of things is going to be filled with black slimey tar, your EGR might be that sooted up it's stuck open, and besides you dont need it for the m.o.t-Get Rid!

Thats correct – Jason2 - your valve may be in a slightly open position so defeating the object, Mine was closed when I took it off though so maybe just removing the feeds may have given the same results, but that massive restriction of the egr valve must cause some air flow issues. Best £50 I spent! – if you just blank it off its under £5 for a pre made plate!

This is done on a lot of diesels, I researched it a fair bit before taking mine off and you should have no issues with the UK mot with it off (my shogun didnt!! and thats done 126k miles!)

In all logic the long terms effects of doing this cant be bad – its kind of defeating the object of having a turbo to force cold air into the system when you have hot carbon gases entering also….. I may be wrong but the difference with it off is somewhat hard to believe. Not sure if the Disco has an intercooler but the shogun has which by just logic the egr would counter act all its good work!

P.S I have kept my EGR in a safe place - just in case – who knows!

This thread has finally convinced me - I'm going to order a blanking plate and valve-removal pipe today! :D

Help...I'm still not clear on this EGR thing!

I have the blanking plate ready to go on, I hear from some people that's all I need, and from others I hear that I need the bypass pipe thing too.

So for a temporary measure, can I just unbolt the EGR from the manifold, clean the inlet pipe, and slip the plate under with a paper gasket, put the same bolts and the EGR valve back on? Will this work? Do I unplug the valve from the loom or just leave it plugged in? Are the bolts long enough?

And if I go the whole hog and get the bypass pipe thingy allowing me to sling the EGR assembly in the bin, does this give any advantage over just leaving the redundant parts in situ?

Thanks!
