Hi,
I've read loads on these forums regarding the removal of the EGR from the 300tdi engine, i've just been out with a torch to see if my new purchase, a 1996 Discovery xs 300tdi still has the EGR in place, it does, but.....I have seen a couple of pictures of these EGR's and mine looks much more 'Industrial' than the one's i've seen in pictures.

It is a huge metal braided clad hose going from (what I assume to be an oil cooler) Rad to a unit that looks like an air pump and then into the manifold, but i then have a coule of pipes (small ones) going from the air pump thingy to a unit located on inner wing (lefthand front) under wheel chock.
Does all that lot go and if so will it get through the next mot (especially if it needs to be a class 7 mot by then).

Sorry to drag up an old topic........but mines different, I think.

Sounds the same, cant see why it would be any different, mines a 96 300tdi exactly as u described, u can do away with it if you want or just block the relevant ends, i did away with mine cuz i replaced the hoses with silicone/ali so the braided bit just looked daft hanging there.

And did it make a difference ?, and have you M.O.T'ed it since ?, I'm a bit concerned that taking it off may cause problems when M.O.T day comes along.
 
Do a search on de-egr... The top pipe going to your oil cooler i'm assuming if you look again will be your top intercooler hose, meanwhile the 'air pump' sounds like your egr valve...

I checked with an M.O.T. garage before removing mine and they said that so long as the emissions are ok then it won't be an issue, and even then the EGR only lowers the emmissions slightly.

Sounds like you've got the standard EGR btw. After removal chances are you'll notice a bit more low end grunt and hopefully improved mpg. Only real downside is that the turbo runs a bit hotter.

Your description sounds like it's describing the egr, but can you take a picture and put arrows on to what you think are the bits you're removing ... don't want to sound like I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but it almost sounds like you're also removing some of the air inlet tubework ... ;)

Mine certainly wasn't a 'huge metal braided clad hose' ... this is what the egr assembly looks like when it's off ...

I think mine had a braided pipe going from egr too the intercooler / inlet manifold pipe.Get rid of it but dont forget to replace or renew intercooler /manifold pipe .
 
ive had my disco 1 300tdi a year now did my homework on here took the egr off put de-cat front pipe on and replaced the turbo pipes then gave it a right good service fully synthetic oil runs a dream and flew through its mot on emissions this year more power slightly better mpg the blanking plates cheap a fiver i think the front pipe fifty quid but you can get cheaper ones if i can do it then im sure you can takes bout 20 mins to give it a service

No worries .. I was afraid you were describing it but getting mixed up with the other air intake tubes or something ... ;)

Has to be said, mine's de-egr;d, de-catted, centre silencer removed and now flies (for Landrover values of flies) and returns way better mpg's .. used to get 300 to 350 a tankful, now easily get 400, last time 450+ to £70 tankfull ... ;)
 
Right then lads, So I'm ripping out the right bit then?.

Now what this De-Cat and middle silencer thing?

And turned what pump up....diesel pump i assume ?
 
you're getting 400+ from a tank Paul, you must have a heavy foot I was moaning that mine's dropped from 525 down to 490 since I fitted the winch/bumper/steering guard.

Yup ... ;)

I never normally run the tank below 1/4 full though, so there's probably another hundred or so in it .. generally now 400 to 450 miles to a £70 fill up .. ;) That, however, also includes towing the caravan, wife and kids every weekend, or at the very least twice a month.

One time I did run the tank almost dry, but not so the light came on, it took £90 to fill up completely.
