A quick Google defines your code as 'EGR circuit range/performance'. The page then goes on to talk about EGR position sensors and temperature monitors, etc.

As far as I know, there is no such sensory monitoring of the EGR on the Td4 (I assume you have a Td4; please always put the engine type and perhaps mileage). The only thing the ECU 'sees' is the EGR solenoid circuit - perhaps your fault lies in the solenoid or wiring.

Hopefully someone with good diagnostic knowledge will now chip in...

The inlet temperature sensor will report a lower than expected inlet temperature. The ECU knows the inlet temperature will be well over that measured by the MAF while the EGR valve is open. If it doesn't see this temperature rise, it logs a pending fault. Mine is flagging this as the EGR is bypassed.
I think this will only apply to later TD4s that have the additional temperature sensor. Early non sensor TD4s wouldn't know that the inlet temperature isn't correct.

Ah, that makes sense. Another good reason for putting vehicle details in the original question.

Absolutely. The more information on the engine and year, the better. I don't believe that the TD4 puts the MIL on for incorrect EGR function, my 05 SE doesn't, that's for sure. Mine does show EGR inlet temperature low on a diagnostic, but I'd expect that as the EGR isn't functional. My Discovery 3 reported the exact same low EGR temperature as it also had blanked EGRs. It didn't put the MIL on either. I do know that Euro 4 compliant engines flag a MIL for low EGR temps but I'm sure the Euro 3 Freelander 1 TD4 doesn't.

Thank you guys for your replies,

i have put my vehicle information below:

Freelander TD4 Auto, LHD, 2004, 3-door, bonatti grey, EGR - Bypass, DPH Silicone Hoses, BMW Crankcase Breather Filter, Synergy 2A

105.000 km

Do you mean this sensor and plug is the fault?? ( see pic, not from my vehicle but form google)

Not necessarily. You need to view the live data from that sensor. Although it does look like there's no wiring to it in the photo.

Still struggling with this fault code P0404... The orange light comes up for couple of days and then disappears. Then comes up again.
Deleted several times with the i930....

Any progress with this one?? Mine now does the same fault code (TD4 2002 134k miles) and has a slight misfire at around 1600 - 1700 RPM.

No Andy,

still have the problem. It appears when the weather outside is warm. During the winter have had no problems. Since two weeks when driving under 2000 rpm the light comes on And there is black smoke coming from the exhaust when I want to accelerate . The car still drives well. Have no idea what it should be...

Some folk suggest it is better to keep your EGR and clean the inlet manifold every year or two. I'm not saying I agree or disagree but if you were to reinstate it you would know if the issue was being caused by the bypass.
On my latest purchase it wasn't running that well so I replaced all the vac and inlet hoses but kept the EGR. I'll probably keep it operational for a while to see how things go. In all three TD4's I've bought the EGR could have been operating anyway as the vac hose was worn right through where they connect to the EGR controller.

Hi, Since fitting the EGR bypass I also get MIL fault Indication 0404. I have the Temp sensor in the air inlet hose.
Has anyone a solution to fix and prevent the Mil lamp showing.

Yes but yer won't like it. Blanking or removing egr's can fail yer mot if yer int UK. New rules starting soon. Removal of engine cover for inspection of bits yer can't see when it's fitted is also coming in.

I don't recall what the fault code was but when I bypassed my EGR on a previous car I also disconnected the EGR solenoid. The car drove fine but the iCarsoft 930 showed a fault.
