Picked up a 2006 Freelander TD4 today, 86000 miles, nice test drive all seemed well, checked the engine before the test drive. The engine bay had been cleaned.

Anyway get home some 220 miles later and open the bonnet to find what looks like spots of oil on the firewall and over the side of the battery. From what I can tell its coming from the pipe I have circled.

Firstly what is that pipe, should it have oil in it?? And secondly would a blocked egr cause that issue.

The EGR valve isn't there, as a bypass has been fitted. I'd check the boost pipe clips are tight. And also check for splits.

On a slightly different note. Make sure it has 4 identical tyres fitted with least worn on the rear and do the one wheel up test ASAP. Unless it's had the propshafts removed, in which case tyres become irreverent.
 
Oh wait, sorry, thats not my pic, I took that from another post on here. The egr is there, I was just showing the pipe as I couldn't find a picture of it or know what it was.

All tyres are identical but the fronts are worn more than the rears so I will change them over at the weekend. The prop is in place and will do that test this weekend

Ah, Ok. Just check the boost pipes for splits, and the clips for highness.

Leave the most worn on the front, or it damages the 4X4 system. When the front need replacing, get 2 identical replacements and fit those to the rear, moving the 1/2 worn rears to the front. ;)

The prop is in place and will do that test this weekend

Might sound silly but all the clips have been replaced all over the engine bay probably to beautify it, would you happen to know the correct size (diameter and width) of the clips that connect to that pipe or could point me in the direction of where I could find out.

Does that pipe normally have oil in it?

Would a blocked egr cause that or could it quite literally be a damaged pipe?
 
One further question, anyone know the torque setting for the bolts holding the egr on? I found some for an egr cooler but not for the egr itself. Thanks
 
Not to worry, Rave to the rescue, I believe its 10nm. Don't think my torque wrench goes that low!

They don't need to be very tight. Just "nip" them up with a standard length Allen key. If you're hurting your hands when tightening them, then they're too tight. ;)
 
Make sure to grunt "click" every time you tighten them or they'll not be the right torque.

Tis VERY important. :p
 
Bit of a wasted few hours, got the whole filter kit, removed the egr, that DID need a good clean! However took the rest apart to do the air filter, hmm brand new one installed, went to do the uprated crankcase breather, hmm its been done. Well I bought this from a dealer a few days ago and its the first time I have ever had an honest dealer who said its just had a service! Even the pollen filter was done. Oh well, at least the egr got a good clean.

Now to sort out the brakes, I know its a big car but my god my brakes feel like it isn't going to stop.

Mine were like that when I got it. I replaced everything, discs, pads, drums, shoes, springs and flexy hoses. The car stops perfectly now, so it was well worth doing. I don't won't take any chances with brakes.
 
Too true, never compromised on the brakes on any of my previous cars. Must admit I haven't worked on drum brakes in many many MANY years so thinking about getting the parts and seeing if I can get a mechanic to fit

An 06 Freelander with low miles like yours should have excellent brakes so something is wrong. I'd take it back to the dealer and get him to sort it.

The rear drums do suffer, mostly because they're very long lived. So they suffer corrosion and hardening of the linings.
Out of interest what brake manufacturer did you go with?

I always use Delphi components for my vehicles, if they're available.
