Hi, i have recently bought my 1st discovery. Its a 2.5 tdi disco 1. I was just wondering if there is any way of making it more economical, as im only getting about 20/25 mpg. The turbo lags quite abit, doesnt seem to kick in till about 2500 revs. Any tips/advice would be very welcome.

its the wrong vehicle if yu want economy, but there are a few things yu can do if yu look around the forum.
 
fuel filter oil filter and air filter change, reset valve clearances and check your tyre pressures, dump all useless guff out of the car and have a look at your driving style, service your brakes too sticky brakes cost mpgs
 
When I removed my EGR I noticed the inlet manifold was quite full of crap so when I had a spare day I took it off and spent a couple of hours cleaning it out. At the same time I took the intercooler out and gave it a good clean inside and out. The result was an increase (small but noticeable) in power, torque and fuel economy. Nice result for relatively small outlay.

As others have said though, you've bought the wrong car for good fuel economy.
 
Buy something that doesn't resemble a large brick ... and search the forum, shed-loads of info ..
 
x2 on the inlet manifold and intercooler clean them out then remove the egr to keep it clean driving under 2000rpm wont really help im not saying rev the nuts off it but don't labor the engine 25mpg is around the 28mpg mark driven carefully

My last TDi was an auto and delivered 33mpg over the 16,000mls I ran it.

However, this was mainly A-road usage, never in towns/traffic jams. Cruising at 65mph on motorways and no strong accelerations.

Keep your tyres well inflated: 32 front; 36 rear (yes, I do know what the book says);

Well serviced and with regular air filter changes;

Drive with anticipation;

Don't carry superfluous weight and no roof racks;

Off road tyres use more fuel, as does high speed cruising, brakes binding, and high revs.

Mine was awful when i first got it, 300tdi auto '96, so I searched and asked on here and as a result i cleaned the fuel sedimentor( off side rear in front of tank, it was full of crap) changed all filters and oil, cleaned intercooler and manifold(make sure they are fully dry before refitting, do a search on it)
got rid of egr and i am more than pleased with it.

New cam belt and upgraded pulleys on today, my next thing is decat, everyone says this is the best performance improvement short of bigger intercooler.

It will never beat new modern diesels on fuel or performance but it depends what you call economy, mine will now do 26 -27 on a 40 or 50 mile run(full tank to start and refilled to same on return) I think for a motor this size that will out pull most is pretty good.

I have had both toyota surfs and pajeros and they both drank like fule was going out of fashion plus they just aint a landrover!!:)

Stop being such a silly cnut, this is a wind up surely? 20/25mpg thats bloody good that is, stop whinging
 
I'm getting whatever my sig says at the bottom, but I do drive her carefully, never revved over 2900-3000 rpm, turbo should kick in around 1750 revs, you can feel it (just) its maxed out around 2800revs. Sounds like yours needs a good clean out maybe the injector pump tweaking a little and the turbo and pipes checking over, specially the small pipe that goes from turbo to injector pump.

Change the air filter twice a year at least, engine oil twice a year, keep the tyres firm, I have Grabber ATs on mine and she's happy at 38psi all round.

If I tow a 1200kg trailer, mpg drops to about 28 I'm happy if it stays above 30 usually.
