I have noticed a few times over the last couple of weeks that the clicking noise from the fuel pump doesn't stop after a few clicks when the ignition is turned on, the car started albeit labouriously so I just put it down to being one of its little quirks.

today it was doing it and wouldn't fire, the smell of fuel was really bad, lifted the bonnet and it was ****ing out of the carb, couldn't see exactly from where, it was dripping from the throttle spindle but there was fuel all over the carb higher up, its a solex s1 carb on a 2.0 l engine.

took the air intake tube off, pressed the starter and rammed the accelerator down hard with my hand, eventually it started, put the air intake tube back on and didn't notice any change in the running, took it off and on a few times no change in tickover.

Started it a couple of times since and no problems, fires almost immediately which is what it does whenever the fuel pump stops clicking as normal.

is that maybe just the float isn't working properly?

Sounds to me like the float is sticking and the pump will happily keep overflowing things... :)

Check the float for cracks, look at the needle and make sure the pivot points aren't worn.

thx, will have a look.

might have a go at a refurb or do one of those exchanges if I can't see anything.

on the plus side I finally got to say hi to the fit Chinese lady that lives down the road whilst I was fiddling with it :D.
