If you only need to do a small amount of hay or straw and you don't have the equipment yet, it would probably be easier to look at some older land driven mowers and hay rakes, and a baler with a donkey engine fitted. A mate of mine did all his mowing with an old finger bar mower behind his discovery.
now that is a very good idea :)

I'll have about four acres to do when the time comes. Do you think that's too much to do manually in this way?

What kind of bailer would I need though. And when you say donkey engine, what do you mean exactly?

Wow, that is proper old kit.

Quite like the idea of mowing it and turning it if I can find the right kit cheap. That baler looks enormous though. Think I'm gonna have to give this some more thought.

the balers arent that much bigger than std baler of that type ie pto driven,
a tractor and pt kit isnt going to be cheap or easy to find either but it is out there

I don't mean to be rude, but you sound quite a novice at the game. Perhaps firstly you need to decide how much have you got to spend and what jobs (size and frequency) you need doing. Only then would you be able to accurately assess what equipment needs to be bought, and what should be hired because of low frequency/high capital ciost makes it more economically viable. You then need a knowledgable owner of a similar smallholding to guide you on best type/make/age of machinery. Otherwise it sounds like you're going to outlay a lot of capital on equipment which might not be the best solution.
