Hi All,

I think someone before me played with the mapping on my Defender TD5. There's a lot of smoke accelerating at low revs and bugger all power pulling away. Higher up goes well though. As a side bar, the internal light only flash when unlocking the doors. I read this is an ECU fault?

My local Landy guys have suggested reverting back to the original ECU program, but they reackon that's going to be expensive (a few hundred quid, and can't guaranty it will work). I wondering about my options.. new ECU? Getting it remapped, but better? Going with the local guys, reverting to stock?

It would be nice to get some better economy too.

Looking forward to suggestions.

I would give Empire tuning a ring, Gareth will sort it out. Back to stock or a new proper map

Hi, first of all make sure that the ECU was not changed with an unproper botched one cos i've seen lots of defenders fitted with D2 auto ECUs remapped but those will never work well no matter what map you save in them. So read the ECU's p/n and tell what year is your Td5 and reveal these things then i'll tell you more

Thanks. I'll check that out and get back to you.

Hi Again,
The numbers on the top of the ECU are:
NNW500900
4191
SALLTGM87
3A802003
The year is 2002.

What do you think?

Not that number, the one on the edge, should be NNN something(000120 or 500020) like in this pic...albeit the 4191 already points to a discovery map and the vin to a 2003 discovery as well, the defender should be with SALLD.....

In addition to the above, if the p/n is NNN000120 or 500020 you'll have to get it remapped with a proper fuel map for your defender cos that 4191homologation is definitely for Discovery, unless the ECU was not remapped and the actual map is not the one on the label though the fact that the defender is running bad makes me think that it is, see this

Hi Sierra,

Finally got the time to get to my ECU. Here's the numbers...

If this is a Disco ECU, can I get a defender map put on or do I need a new ECU?

That's a Td5 ECU suitable for both D2 and Defender just that your's has a D2 fuel map in it according to that label on the top, get it remapped for your Defender and it should be OK, your's being from 2002 can be Eu2 or Eu3 cos it was the transition year so make sure you get the proper fuel map for it

BTW...if you dont know exactly what engine you have check the airbox sensor...if it has 3 wires get Eu2 map if it has 4 wires then Eu3.
