I "should" have checked compression a long time ago. But you know yourself, if you haven't overheated the engine and its only covered 22k mile , you just don't expect something like this.
But every part I replaced seemed to help, for a bit. I think it got much worse just after I put the Magnecor leads on. It obviously sparked better so burned the fuel better and killed it to death.
Now I own a compression tester, I'll mostly check every petrol engine. But how do you do a wet test on a Beetle or a Subaru

Thought I had replied to this already! Ahh well, here's the culprit...
The block and head have faired well enough. Here's the block... There's no gouges or anything. The carbon will clean off.
I found a bad thread on the tensioner pulley bracket which holds another idler pulley so I got it heli coiled. I also asked them to clean up the particularly manky valley manifold. Nice job
There are a few marks, but they'll come off with some ally clean or Dr Magic oven cleaner
I'm doing both banks even though the right bank seems unaffected. But I've ordered composite gaskets and new head bolts. Looking for stainless bolts for the exhaust manifolds to keep the job easy....for next time
While I'm at it, see those bastarding exhaust manifold shields
How in the name of jeebus did they put them on there? I can only assume they go on when the engine is sitting on a bench!!

We wrapped the exhausts rather than try to fix the heat-shields. As you say, they're barstewards. Takinh wheelarch liner out and coming in from the side can help.
I have both arch liners off.
Kermit, I have heard tales of these manifolds "glowing red hot" while under power such as towing up a hill or spirited driving... A couple of reports of sound deadening material catching light
I can get replacements from Island 4x4, but the outers are £80 and the inners are £40
Looks like I'll be using a ball pein hammer to straighten the buckled parts and a riv nut tool to insert new fasteners

It's better to wrap the manifolds, those tin heat shields are a pain in the dick to fit and remove..
I've dyno'd a few engines and had a fair few power pulls through them before the manifolds even think about glowing red, that is an almost impossibility on an old RR.
Thirdly use ARP studs instead on stretch bolts...

Oh and from Looking at your Cylinders, you don't have Top Hat liners which is very odd for a RPI RV8.
Also you have a Morgan Fitment RV8 ...
AND!!
The Valley looks quite dirty for a 20-30k engine, unless you've only changed the oil twice in that time, being that it also ran LPG that amount of tarnish is indicative of a higher mileage, albeit maintained engine..
I'd pull a few of the tappets and check the face for any wear..

@monkfish24 wrapped his manifolds with Kevlar or something....remember it messed his hands up with splinters ..... looked really nice though

But I assure you the engine got new oil (obvs) when it was installed. It did 2k miles then sat for 5yrs before I got it. In the 20k miles of my ownership it has had 4 oil changes.
It may look dirty in the photo, but in daylight it is golden. I can only imagine any dirt in the oil has been caused when the cats went and I was running on 6.5 cylinders and running rich quite a lot of the time due to various dubious sensors.
