i got one of those as well with software and serial to usb adapter i cant get mines to sync but everyone else can lol make sure when you open application in top drop down menu to change your comm port to match the one you are using in device manager,
i try it with car running myself rather than key in second position as i have a battery problem too lol plug it in to obd2 comm port correct initialise your ment to get ff and 1 in first box and ffs in the recieve buffer i get 28s and 80s which means its not recieving/syncing with the car.
there are videos on how to use the software

i soldered a 9 pin connector in permanently to the back of obd plug. this is in my opinion the best way as you will get a good connection and need carry only the serial to usb connector. in my case its used for the lpg system to so 2 systems one lead!

you know the connection that goes to the usb adaptor, on the obd lead side. solder the wires to the coeesponding wires in the back of the plug on the car. you can take the panel off where the socket sits on the car!

i didnt get any piccys of the wires under the panel for some strance reason! the last one is how the pins connect, i find this alot easier. also i did not have an obd plug around, the 9 pin is from a serial mouse which you can pick up for a couple of quid!

I gave my 1998 p38 a fault whe i wrote settings back into EAS and i could not reset fault until I added some comms delay and had the engine running while doing it. Coinsidance? not sure, I will only know when i pluck up the courage to have another fiddle

With Rovacom anyway, all sort of communication faults can and do occur and the vast majority of these are caused by poor connections on the OBDII socket. Try Switch Cleaner and an old stiff toothbrush, followed by another dose and inserting/removing the plug a few times.
WD40 as has been posted, is a waste of time, just coats over the ****e.:behindsofa:
