Took my Discovery in for MOT today, and was having a spot of dinner with a friend who has a March 1999 registered TD5,and we were talking about EGRs and stuff. Seems his Discovery was not fitted EGR or catalyst from new......first I've heard of UK market cars not having an EGR....thought it was only ROW spec

Me too, AFAIK that's how it was, 10P(Eu2) engines left the factory without catalyst, 15/16,...up to 22P(Eu3) were all fitted with it, as about EGR those made for Europe had it all from factory, there were some early Td5s made for Africa, Australia or NZ which didnt have EGR, mostly Defenders

I've just decoded the VIn for this vehicle, and it's showing engine code "9" which is apparently for a TD5 with EGR, but no catalyst.

The owner is the third owner, who bought it from a friend, so the EGR was deleted quite a while back....mystery solved, thanks

Tampering with original fitment of the exhaust is now an MOT fail.
