Hi guys,

My dad was driving the p38 at about 50 when a damaged cooler pipe decided to spew all the ATF all over the road. He tell me it lost drive and he pulled over swiftly.

There was a puddle under the car when it stopped so not totally empty. Had it recovered home safely.

So I ordered new pipes and have new cooler but what do you rate the chances that the autobox will be ok??

If he pulled over quickly then chances are it should be ok. Then only real test is to fill her up and give it a try.

Should be fine, the 'losing drive' thing is the fail safe. There is a pressure switch which if not 'made' effectively takes the box out of gear. The only damage that might occurr would be if you shorted out the pressure switch and forced the gearbox to drive without oil. Also, heaps of oil will still be in box, the pick up for the pump is quite high (even though the filter is in the bottom of the sump),

when you get the new pipes make sure there is no strain on the short flexible one as that is probably where it went.
I personally have had new one made up by ENZED or someone similar they are much stronger pipes and might cost about the same.

The box can't provide drive without oil it is impossible. :);)

The Fart Pants bloke is an idiot Tony:rolleyes::D:D

Thanks Tony, can always count on you for the low blow.. I didn't say it would drive without oil. I said damage would occur if the pressure switch were shorted out. You barrack room lawyers can give it out but you certainly can't take it:D

Tony, Keith? Whatever the name? Its all the same, dare to disagree with a 'Senior' member and you get personal insults. What is a forum for? To increase your number of posts quicker by using sarcastic 'one liners' to people with less experience? If so, then Datatek is a king!
This goes back a few years but the 'king' get very upset with me because I asked for some instructions with my EAS unlock cable. This is just him trying to get even. Insult is the first resort of the intellectually challenged!;)

Nothing about disagreeing with senior members. It is the junior member is WRONG..:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Read the post. I said the gearbox won't be damaged because it has a failsafe in the form of a pressure switch. I didn't say it could run without oil. Get a grip guys!

No fail safe pressure switch that i am aware of. Run the engine with no oil in the box and you will knacker the oil pump.

Have to say I have never seen a pressure switch in the 'box hydraulic circuit...maybe JM or Bemble could confirm...certainly not shown in RAVE.

There is a Pressure Regulating Solenoid which reduces hydraulic pressure on the clutch packs during gear selection changes to prevent sudden clutch engagement...which if the Solenoid fails, shifting is limited to third and forth only...but it is not a pressure sensor or pressure switch.

There is no failsafe pressure switch. Is that good enough?
