Hi, I would go for a P38 V8 Range Rover, yeah I know it's got a poor rep but what fun to drive.
Mines a 4.6 HSE, I do around 1K miles per week get 23 mpg on motorways and around 17 elsewhere. I had a TD5 Disco it did 31 mpg, but it leaked so much water from the sunroofs and heater vents then the injector harness failed also started using coolant like it was going out of fashion. I was given my money back when I complained to the dealer. Since owning the P38 I had the rear diff pinion bearing go, the air mass sensor failed, the trans oil cooler seeps a little and the cable for the drivers door release went, an air spring went, all repaired easily, spares are easy to get.
Service the vehicle every 6K run on semi synthetic oil and a can of Wynns. Over a period of 18K miles.
I am now thinking of getting another P38, and keep the current one as a back up vehicle, instead of my Honda Accord (which does 40 mpg but not as nice as a P38 to drive).
Be careful there are lots of vehicles to choose from, buy in haste repent at leisure.
 
Again I'll say keep the Olds. That car is an icon.

Since you're set on dealing away the land yacht, what kind of price do you think you can get for it in the UK?


Yes, your post made me think about that option! To be honest I'm still thinking on it, but I've had a hankering for a LR for some time now..... The Olds is great but not that practical - can't take it out in the rain, you can guess the mpg from a tuned 330ci V8, and not really viable as a 2nd car, but great as a toy!. I may well live to regret if I sell, I imagine it's the only 64 Vista Cruiser in the UK - but if it does go, I'm hoping to get £6k.
 
The cheap RR doesn't exist. They are great cars but they need lots of TLC and every item specced on them new is something to go wrong later. They all cost a bomb to keep. Disco will do you fine for what you want and that money can get you a decent one if you're careful. Have you considered a 110 also?
 
I went with a discovery 2 V8 when I was looking
Reason for doing that was
1 I don't need to use it every day so mpg is not a problem I get 20mpg ave and 15mpg with the caravan on the back
2 the v8 is a simple engine it's not even got a cam belt to worry about so just oil and filter once a year
3 I see more threads on here about problem with the td5 than the v8 I know the biggest problem with the v8 is cracked blocks and that's not a cheap fix but if you worry out things going wrong with it then don't buy a land rover
4 the v8 are cheaper to buy because people worry about fuel cost so you can get a real good bargain if you look round so yes you will need to sell it cheaper than a td5 but you wouldn't have paid as much in the first place
5 it nicer to drive smoth responsive and it don't sound like a HGV
I bought my top spec d2 2003 with just under 110k and full service history for 4000 a year ago all I've had to do to it was fix the water leaks (all done now) and a steering damper

Can't fault your logic there - exactly the same as my thinking - I don't do many miles so mpg isn't a showstopper, and 20 is OK. I do like the sound of a V8.....
Head says diesel, heart says V8.
