Hi Guys,
I'm just about to sell my '64 Oldsmobile station wagon (5.5 litre V8) and invest the cash wisely (or not) in a Landy, and want to canvas opinion from experienced owners. I'll have around £5500 to spend, and it's Disco v Range Rover, diesel v petrol.

It's for family outings, occasional bit of mild off road fun, MPG not a complete showstopper as my mileage is low, but need a bit of comfort for wife and kids. The Disco 7 seats would be handy but not essential. The main thing is I need as much reliability as I can get (given that I will be buying a 10 year old LR) and as few nasty (expensive) surprises as possible.

I've done a bit of reading and know some of the issues to look for, but if anyone has any tips I'd be grateful, eg diesel v V8 - which one is best for longevity? Does the V8 really do 12mpg? Which is easier to maintain? And if I need to sell in 18 months, which will retain value better?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

5.5k aint gonna get you a lot of motor. And yep 12mpg is realistic. For that money id say v8 disco over a rr.
 
For £5K you will be looking at P38 RR's so I would give up on that straight away, they are the most unreliable pieces of junk LR ever made (someone will now come and say thiers is great but the stats dont lie i'm afraid, as good as they are they are crap!). Personally I would go Disco 2 TD5, 30+mpg and plenty of road going power, can chip it if you want more and is alot more reliable than the V8.

Or you could get a 15 year old defender and wonder why the hell would anyone spend £5K on one of these!!

For that sort of thing I would say probably a Discovery 2 TD5 - You can get a fairly good one for that sort of price and would make an ideal family vehicle for outings etc. Like all other Land Rovers, they also offer a fair amount of cusomisation to suit your needs.
 
+1 for td5 disco. £5k should get you 03 with around 100k miles on it if you dont go to a dealership of any kind.

If you feel you have to go to honest joes car sales youd be lucky to get a high mileage early facelift for £5k. more likly a 51 plate non facelift.

My advice, find sombody mechanicly minded and trust and do the auto trader. wouldn't do ebay for anything of that caliber.
 
I agree about the Discovery. Brilliant car for the money. I just wouldn't bother with a P38 unless you are really keen on them. Some people love them but I actually prefer the look of a disco and they are great for what you are wanting a vehicle for.
Defenders are awesome but i think your family would prefer the comfort of a discovery.
From what I have heard diesels last longer than the v8s and I would have thought would hold their value better too.

v8s are cheeeeeep to buy cos no ****er wants em. But yep, also wont make money back on it if yer sell quickly.
 
I picked up my '03 disco with 118k on the clock for £4k. £5.5k should get you something pretty damn mint :)

1k!!!!! Does it have wheels? An engine? does it move? Or is it one of those new 'statue' edition Land Rovers?

don't rule out the tratter engined p38,both cars have there + and - maybe a few more - on the range rover but if your any good with the spanners there's nothing that cant be sorted with a little help from the guys on here.drive a V8 and you probably wont a doozal:D:behindsofa:

You need more than spanners to maintain a P38 ;)
 
I went with a discovery 2 V8 when I was looking
Reason for doing that was
1 I don't need to use it every day so mpg is not a problem I get 20mpg ave and 15mpg with the caravan on the back
2 the v8 is a simple engine it's not even got a cam belt to worry about so just oil and filter once a year
3 I see more threads on here about problem with the td5 than the v8 I know the biggest problem with the v8 is cracked blocks and that's not a cheap fix but if you worry out things going wrong with it then don't buy a land rover
4 the v8 are cheaper to buy because people worry about fuel cost so you can get a real good bargain if you look round so yes you will need to sell it cheaper than a td5 but you wouldn't have paid as much in the first place
5 it nicer to drive smoth responsive and it don't sound like a HGV
I bought my top spec d2 2003 with just under 110k and full service history for 4000 a year ago all I've had to do to it was fix the water leaks (all done now) and a steering damper

Again I'll say keep the Olds. That car is an icon.

Since you're set on dealing away the land yacht, what kind of price do you think you can get for it in the UK?
