On our 2006 TD5 90, the throttle pedal only required a small push to accelerate and the turbo to kick in.
However, if you floored it, the throttle would then assume a different mode, where it would still perform but you had to push the pedal further down. Plus the boost then seemed more progressive, possibly with less outright power.
Switching off and on the ignition always reset it. It was always like that over the 40,000 miles we did in it.
Now l have a 2005 TD5 110 and it is the same. If you floor the accelerator, say to overtake, it defaults into "mode B" where the pedal requires much more movement before it performs.

Is there any way to stop it doing this? I assume it's to protect the transmission from abuse, but it's a bit of a pain on the motorway having to avoid full throttle.

AFAIK there's no such thing on a Td5, i dunno much about defenders but as they work with the same ECMs like the D2 i doubt that the throttle is the problem,... i'd say it's more like a turbo lag or fueling issue cos i was with a friend's Td5 defender not long ago and it pulled like a train... unplug the MAF and see how it goes then, make sure the EGR is not clogged, the air and fuel filters are new but be aware that there's no kickdown on manuals so a real sudden kick of the throttle will not complete instantly the driver demand on no td5 whatsoever

I just thought there is a sensitivity setting applicable when in low range, never heard of any other settings on the throttle. My 2005 drives just fine, never noticed any differences in throttle postion.

Both my TD5's have done it, the 90 we bought new.

On my 110 the EGR has been removed, cat bypass pipe fitted, fuel filter changed etc. I guess l will just have to live with it....l have done for the past nine years.

I tried to get to the bottom of it on my 90 but never did. Maybe a remap will improve matters.

I had mine remapped a week after I bought it, so I can't remeber now what a standard td5 is like anymore

Mike from Dynachip did a most excellent job, he is really thorough explains what you need to do before he remaps it, then comes down from Newcastle runs a diagnostic if all is well he then tunes it by the exhaust gas temps so not to cause issues. Top service for £225.
