Hiya guys,:confused::confused:

Can somebody offer some advice as to what may be causing the following on my 1995 dse. Whilst on heavy load and under boost the exhaust is throwing out a big cloud of black smoke. And have now been told by a member of family that has followed the car that there is a greyish colour smoke constantly coming out of the exhaust althoughit is not noticeable from the mirrors whilst driving the car.
 
What type of use does the vehicle mostly get, short in town trips, open roads, or fast motorway?

Driven gentle or hard?

Do you tow if so what?

How often is the vehicle serviced?

Vehicle mileage?






My diesel black smoked quite a bit when pushed, until I done a 300 mile motorway drive, I have a feeling all the crap got blown out the back.

its done 122k and has 19 stamps in the service book so is pretty well looked after.

we use it as a family car and only really go round the town in it.

not thrashed but does get some boot from time to time.

the previous owners had a caravan but we dont tow with it.

Diesels, like petrol engines will smoke for a while when pushed if they have generally been pottered around.
If the smoke persists, look at the air filter first. Other possibilities include worn injectors, coked up EGR valve (if yours has one), partially blocked intercooler and maybe a worn injector pump as a last resort.:eek:
Hopefully a good thrash or a new air filter will cure the problem:D
 
The air filter has been mentioned......The car has a K&N fitted that you blow off with airlines to clean it. Is it woirth while slinging a new standard one in instead

Not a bad idea, can't think that a K&N would make much difference on a P38 diesel even if it were in perfect condition. Just wonder if the previous owner has made any other "performance mods" that might have affected the fuelling?
 
Dont know, although he did seem a little old for race tuned rangies.

Gonna put new fuel and air filter in her tomorrow and some injector cleaner then see what happens after its been out for an hour or so.

Work it hard with plenty of revs for a while, hold it in 3rd gear for a while at speed and see if the smoke clears.
 
The intercoolers on these do get clogged and need cleaning out - mine smokes a lot when i press the loud pedal (ok, so its loud anyway as its a Diesel, but you get the point)

If you do a search on here for intercooler cleaning, you'll get the process for doing it...
I've been meaning to do mine for a year and still haven't found time!
 
Our '99 DSE does the same, I was going to fit a K&N filter to see if that would make it any better. I was also considering getting the injectors cleaned, let us know how you get on with it, mines off the road at the moment as the brake modulator is knacked so I'm now waiting for parts from Rover Renovations in the states. grrr!!!!
 
Ok well what about this one.

I was speaking to somebody today at a job and they had autodata with the Faults and fixes facility. and this is what it had to say

94-02 td range rover.

Problem:
Lack of power
White smoke coming from exhaust

Cause:
Turbocharger (TC) hose between intercooler and engine collapsed internally.

Remedy:
Replace turbocharger (TC) intercooler hose
Part number ESR3289


Let me know your thoughts please.

The air filtere is a serviceable k&n that you blow out with airlines to clean them.:confused:

That's not how you clean a foam air filter: first you clean it with cleaning fluid, then apply 'special' light oil to get it working again. Might as well put a sponge in instead...

Genuine air filters are cheap enough to replace so I'd go back to one of them. Also the intercooler clean-out is recommended at your mileage.

Re the Autodata fault check, you're not getting white smoke though are you?

Yep just a little stream while running along but took it to a local and well respected diesel man today and he said its nothing to worry about.

I have looked for the clean out post but cant find it what to use while cleaning it out
