Hi
I have a 98 dse Has been running fine no problems cold or hot starting.
Middle of last week when starting misfiring for about 20 seconds then picked up ok. Did the same thing every day until yesterday when would not run.

Turns over runs for a few seconds cuts out.
Put 10 litres of fuel in in case gauge faulty
Have changed fuel filter and cracked injectors off looks to have plenty of fuel at injectors.
Spins over pretty fast good strong battery.

Desperation had the AA man out. He did the same as me checked glow plugs, power to tank pump, and bled injectors.
Result offered to get me taken to garage as he suspects injector pump but non commital.

Car has never missed a beat in the past. Even when I ripped the centre of the clutch out last year towing a FL6 complete with 10 ton skip.
I have solid flywheel with heavy duty Ford clutch driven plate. Covered 20k miles no problem. Running on bio diesel for last 18months.

Can anyone recommend an honest diesel centre in and around North Bedfordshire please or some simple tests I can do.
Regards
Simon

Bio may have knackered the pump not a lot else to add to that. We live and learn.

Off topic but how did you do the conversion and what clutch plate did you use?

I take it the friction plate from the Ford had a sprung centre?

Just about to swap the engine in my P38 and if the DM flywheel isn't good was looking to do a solid flywheel conversion, just not found any info on how to do it

When you say you have fuel at the injectors, does it squirt out at high pressure when you turn the engine over?
Have you checked that the lift pump is working?

If you have fuel under pressure at the injectors, check the glow plugs.

Otherwise it needs diagnostics, could be the crank sensor has given up.

Tank fuel pump not working. Will strip at the weekend.

With regard to bio I reckon I am in profit even if the pump failure is due to the fuel. I know it does play havoc with any rubber it comes into contact with. The car has done 135k so will be difficult to lay the blame.
My wife has a E280 Merc and it did not like it at all even when using 50-50
Took longer to start and did not have the same power. The RR has not shown these problems. Always on the button cold or hot.

On the solid flywheel. When I cocked up mine towing the lorry and found out DMF's were so expensive we had three solid ones made. One for me one for my son and one as a spare. The guy who machined them makes flywheels for quite a few applications so is well used to the job. He machined out the backs to try and get the weight down to the same as the DMF but they are still heavier. He made them to suit a cosworth centre plate which should have enough strength to take the power and torque. We use my original ring gear and the standard pressure plate. You could have a plate made up to suit if you want more centre springs.
Informed opinion says that a solid flywheel causes a lot of vibration. Since just about every other car or van that has a DMF also has aftermarket solid alternatives we thought to give it a go. Mine does exhibit a 'harshness' through the gears but is fine in top. I did not have my flywheel balance as it is a steel billet but probably should have done just to ensure it not contribute to any problems.
Did fit a new set of flywheel bolts. Got them from BMW as the RR dealer kept throwing up the wrong ones.
I have not experienced any problems. Have tugged some heavy weights and a bit of off road with no problems.

Now I'm lost. I worked all weekend and my son came round early this morning. Bled the injectors and it started perfectly. Been in and out all afternoon and started on the button each time. After I spent £43 on a new fuel pump as well...

how much fuel is in the tank??

SS, any idea of the all in price for a solid flywheel conversion and a contact number for the guy???

So all you did is bled it and it's OK now? Did you check the flow from the intank pump? If not and the pump is duff, next time the tank is low you will be in trouble again. Otherwise put it in the for sale section:)

Monday morning did not start. Turns over fires for a few seconds and stops.
Wednesday pipe off from filter turn over hardly any fuel coming through.
Fit new fuel pump. (Tank over half full of proper diesel) Bled through. Starts and runs fine.
Every hour or so until ten went outside starts on the button. Pleased as punch.
Thursday 05:15 set off for work.... No start exactly the same runs on for few seconds dies.
I'm married to an angel. Wake wife in pj's takes me to work.

We will have a flywheel spare if you are interested. They worked out at £350 each which is not cheap. Cheaper than a DMF though. The guy only made the flywheels so you will need to sort the ring gear and clutch but that's not difficult.
If you want to have a look at it I could probably arrange to get it down to you and if you are not interested send it back. Unless you ever saunter through Bedfordshire.

Cheers
Sid
