Is the main crank bolt on the M51 engine a stretch bolt? RAVE says it should be discarded and a new one used - is that necessary?

Main crank bolt? Do you mean the one holding the pulley on? Don't know about stretch bolt but it has to be bloody tight as it drives the oil pump. Whatever you do, do not rotate the crank anti clockwise.

Replace it in any case, you never know how many times it has been on and off previously

Yes, the big bugger in the middle of the crank pulley! It's torqued to 100mn then an additional 150 degrees of angle. Not sure if it's ok to reuse it?

What is the downside to turning the engine the wrong way (not that I have). Is it the potential for the chain to slip and put the cam/fip out of time?

Chain can jump crank sprocket.

100Nm then afurther 150deg sod that!!! When i did the 200Tdi that was 80Nm then a further 90deg and that was a nightmare!

Also a must is to use the special tool to hold the hub when you tighten up, the sprocket is held on by a silly little woodruff key that can be damaged by the incorrect tightening procedure.

My local Land Rover Dealer very kindly lent me the tool and it's a big beefy bit of kit its Number is:

LRT 12 105

Good luck
