i was thinking of buying a auto p38 dse i already have a powerbox in my manual . if i put in an ashcroft box and uprated converter with the chip would i get 100k before the box dies? i know it depedds on driving style , my driving style is not very agressive but i like to get to 60 quickly. would like advice on this....thanks..

Who know's? Ashcroft use 4hp24 clutches I believe to uprate the 22 where they will fit, so it ought to handle the extra torque but if you go for the full monty it's a very expensive solution. It would actually be cheaper to replace the standard box at 50K!
To my mind the best solution is to fit a 4hp24 with the uprated torque convertor which I'm 90% sure can be done:)

The weak points on the 4HP22 seem to be the one way clutches. Not the actual engagement clutches as such. Although fitting a chip to a high miler that has not been maintained is asking for trouble. The combination of a chip and a sticky valve block and towing will see the box out.

What uprated torque converter is that?
I Know that Ashcroft makes one for the Td5 using the torque converter from the 4.0L engine, but never saw one for the DSE engine.

There were 3 different torque convertors fitted to the P38 of which the diesel had the smallest. It would seem that the next size up is a direct fit. At least that is what I read somehwere on the Ashcroft site.:)

yes ashcroft have got an uprated converter , the standard converter is listed at £150 and the upgraded one is £315 the upgraded one will lock up at a lower engine speed and allow the vehicle to take up drive earlier as regards the gearbox im thinking that datatec is making sense about letting the standard box do 50k. isnt there a difference in length between the h22 and the h24 boxes? i know a friend of mine has a h24 box with only about 30k on it. it came out of a vehicle that was converted from petrol auto to diesel manual.

I am also planning on fitting a HP24 to my diesel although I haven't had the time to progress the project very far as yet. My DSE has a J Fearne chip and a larger intercooler.

I have got a brand new 4.6 Thor gearbox ready to go in which has the largest 4.6 torque converter fitted.

I am assuming this is unsuitable and I need the middle sized one for the 4.0.
Ideally I would like to see a HP22 box and a HP24 box side by side to see what the differences are.

Other questions spring to mind :

- will the larger torque converters fit into the diesel bell housing?
- are all transfer boxes the same? petrol/diesel ?

The HP24 box is longer by about 20mm I believe. I am not sure what problems this would cause if any.

transfer box epicyclic gear set is different between petrol and diesel because of gear box output shaft splines, some internal parts like clutch A clutch C and free wheel plus stronger gear hubs

The heavy duty torque converter in the Ashcroft site will fit the Td5.
Even if the Td5 drive plate is also triangular as in the DSE im not sure if the plate size is the same.

i knew there was a difference in splines but i wasnt sure if it was between petrol/diesel or auto and manual so it looks like diesel box with uprated converter . you can also get the gearbox remapped if u want or ashcroft can supply a unit that allows you remap the gearbox yourself at a cost of  £795 + vodka .(not happening)

sorry your right it is manual or auto ,either auto would be the same

There seems to be two basic types of Borg Warner NV225 transfer boxes listed in Microcat.

Type 1: FTC4207 / superseded by FTC4744
Type 2: FTC4208 / superseded by FTC4745

My diesel auto transfer box is FTC4745.
Do we assume type 1 is for manuals only and type 2 is the same for all autos?

The H24 is longer than the H22, but according to my info this is accommodated by a different length spacer between the auto box and the transfer box. You would need the h24 transfer box too I believe and the bell housing from the H22. Looks like it is a straight swap then, but yet to try it.

all of a sudden this looks promising i might buy the h24 box from my friend and if the diesel one packs up i will know that i have a good standby so its looking like im looking for a nice dse auto to purchase then fit uprated converter and powerbox and let it last as long as it will .
