got in my MK 1 Auto after work today, put it in to drive, squeezed the accelerator, but it didn't want to go. I gave it a bit more pedal then it have a bit of a bang and off it went. It sounded like the bang came from the rear left. I assume the shoes were locked on the drum. Is this a common fault ?

Yes, needs a strip down, clean, grease and reassemble, don't forget to check your brake cables at the drum end, lube and if needed change them.

I've had this problem since I've started using the car less since I retired. I took the drums off and cleaned them and the shoes with 80 grit abrasive paper. Now when I park it up at home, I leave the handbrake off and put it in first gear.

You don't need to use the handbrake on the auto if in park .
They do rust on in this wet weather .

hiya

ive got an auto, stripped and cleaned all my drums and had the same problem when i left my hand brake on, found if i put it into reverse first then forward they came unstuck
