Hi when driving my 110 i get to speed at pop it into 5th gear and i get a weird droning sound, its a slow sound which you can kind of feel vibrating through the truck and its not constant, It comes and goes every second or so. Any ideas or suggestions would be great thanks

What would be helpful is what Defender it is. 2.5n/a, 200tdi, 300tdi, TD5, Puma, V8......

The sound only happens when in 5th gear??

Could be transfer box whining. when was the last time you changed the oil on the transfer box and gearbox.

all oil just been changed, sure is a strange noice

Have you tried dipping the clutch when the noise is in full song.
Dipping the clutch will keep the drive train the same but remove the torque put on it by the engine.
See if that makes any difference to the noise.

Yes it could be but this 5th gear thing is confusing things. Possibly a speed related thing and 5th gear he is going faster.

Tyres! Only apparent in 5th so you are doing a bit of MPH. What tyres have you got on it?
The more aggressive the tread the worse it will be.

I have got a set of bog standard set of defender wheels on at the moment, I have got some massive 285 discovery wheels i could put on and see if theres any difference.

just put new u/j's on and the prop-shafts looked ok when i put them back on.

Its not the wheels, swapped them, droning sound stops when I dip the clutch. Could it be the transfer box?

Transfer box is working the same in all gears (although the torque rises).
If dipping the clutch stops it go back to reply 14.
