I am considering fitting some of these to the front bumper on my defender 90

Phillips Daylight 8 LED series lights

These units obviously have an ignition feed so they come on when the engine is started for day time use but then they also take a feed off the side lights which dims the units to 50% brightness for night time driving.


In there video they say that you must remove your side light bulbs though to conform with legislations bla bla.


My question though are they right?

Ill swear ive seen hundreds of cars running these DRL's with side lights and full beam headlights on.

Surely the whole point of fitting these is for the extra look aswell as safety you wouldnt want to remove your side lights to fit these.
 
My reading of the legislation is they should come on with ignition and turn off when side lights are switched on, unless they have the facility to dim their output when the standard side lights are turned on.

I haven't read by 'how much' they need to dim if left working with other lights
 
I like to think that during daylight hours, I should be seen and heard far before any other car that might blend into society.
 
I'm well aware about they should dim at night etc the Phillips ones reduce by 50% to prevent dazzling but my question is

Are you still allowed to have your Land Rover side lights switched on at the same time as the dimmer DRL LIGHTS. As I have seen some videos that say you must remove your existing side lights....


But then I have also seen a video from RING lighting that clearly shows both side lights and Dimmer DRL LIGHT.


As for the question are they worth doing well it's like all these mods people do to their defenders. If you can afford it and want to do it then I suppose you get on and do it plus there is an added safety bonus to these there is no excuse for people not to see or infact hear your defender coming down the road

Forget who but think there are some mot testers on here

If you want to double check, maybe ask your local mot tester on their understanding?

Yeah that sounds like a very good idea! I'm hoping the answer is yes you can still have the dimmed DRL lights on aswell as your side lights and dipped lights at night!

That way you've got the best looks aswell as the added visibility and safety
 
Dont see why not, you see loads of trucks with more than one pair of "side lights" on em, IIRC as long as one pair of lights is in the correct position, then the others are "supplementary lighting" and not part of the construction and use regs, as long as they dim I dont see an issue, I cant see anything about DRLs having to dim with indicators though, afaik thats an add on to make the front end of new cars look like a mobile disco, (indicate, DRL dim/fog light on)
 
Side lights are, and always have been, intended primarily as parking lights. That's the only real time they should be on and the headlights not. Dim-dip was a nice idea to give something in between full headlights and parking lights for town driving.

Personally, I don't see the point of DRLs on a regular car, let alone a 90 that already makes enough noise to announce its presence. All they do is obscure bikes (pedal and motor) and encourage halfwits not to use their real headlights at night. If visibility is poor, turn your headlights on. If not, a car should be perfectly visible without being lit up like a christmas tree.

Why don't you just wire the headlight circuit to come on, a hell of a lot easier and everything is there, you can even get the NAS loom adapter that converts the switching. Or, just do what I do, if it's dull or rainy, switch my lights on!

The only reason they added them was so muppets who can't work out when to put on lights themselves have lights on, however, now these total idiots drive about with them on at night thinking they have lights on and not a bloody thing on at the back.
