As above what's the rules as I have a friend who will fix my motor a ways away. But wants to put it through MoT before he looks just to get a list off a trusted MoT tester because the garage I just used has some major inconsistencies on the 2 MoT's I had. Can I just drive it there or will it need towing down?

Needs to be insured that's all:)

Unless they changed the rules recently you can drive it directly to an mot station anywhere in the Country. But if ya stop off for a coffee or take a detour. you is driving with no mot or tax.

Fully comp insured will be driving 60ish miles though! It's more for the trusted tester/help I'll have at hand!!

Straight to Clevedon Tesco for fuel then down motorway.

and your motor needs to be booked into the mot station. They will check if you get pulled.

Just make sure you explain to mot station and give them your reg number. Take a direct route to the mot. You should be fine.

Then when you get the MOT, tax it from the start of the month ie. May. A question that is asked on the application is " Have you driven or used the vehicle on the road since the last VEL expired". Your answer has to be yes.

Hmmm, I must admit I thought that no tax meant no driving.

Of course it would be unreasonable to not be able to drive to mot on road if you need mot to get tax but I was under the impression that no tax was a simple one, no driving.

Quite likely to be wrong, but direct.gov most likely has the answer.

Or smarties.

as i understood it the vehicle has to booked in to the mot station & be insured. but on the other hand i have heard of someone being stopped by the police whilst complying with above & receiving a caution.

It can be driven without a current VEL provided it is insured and is being driven directly to the MOT station for a pre-booked test ON THE DAY OF THE TEST.

Agree

Dis-agree.

If the mot station is miles away and you are driving pass open/more local MOT garages/stations, I'II lay money down plod/vosa won't be happy with a non-inspected vehicle being driven on the road.

Your supposed to take it to a local inspector (if it has no mot), you'll get away with 5 miles but not 60 miles.

I suppose if youre being fair they'll be fair with you, if you take the mickey youre liable for a wrist slap or more.

I was under the impression it was meant to be the closest mot station technically! It has to be insured and booked in properly ie they need to be able to quote the reg no. and owners name to plod. Plus even tho it has no mot it still needs to be roadworthy and safe!

best bet is to book online with someone like kwik fit, thats what i did, print out the appointment and take it with you in case you get a pull. MOT25 promo code gets you a mot for £25 aswell.

Just thinking back, someone was selling a voucher on ebay for a £15 mot offer, i was searching for kwik fit promo codes at the time as my mot was due, they had a picture of the voucher, i only zoomed in on it, read the code and used it online, i am a b*stard, i know.

You actually trust kwik fit? This would be a good thread on its own. And did your vehicle pass?
