Hi peeps,

Firstly, I'm new to off-roading so don't grill me!

Being a noob, I'm a little concerned about the possibility of getting completely stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Yes, I have a lot to learn. But we all start somewhere.

Today, I took my trusty old MTB through some green lanes near me. (don't have a 4x4 just yet) They were a tad narrow and overgrown in places, and some of this particular stretch was quite steep. I figured that if the terrain was a little tough for the vehicle, I'd probably have to go through some grazing fields. Has anyone here resorted to doing this knowing that you're driving across somebody's property? Do farmers usually mind? Is it an absolute nono or something that people will commonly resort to doing as a last resort?

never ever go off piste.Old bill can seize n crush ya car.
Go with some one off here and you shouldnt have a problem, even if ya get stuck.If yer do get stuck then the Landyzone rescue service will come get ya, take the ****, laff, get ya out thn take the **** on here.
 
as goony says NEVER EVER go into a farmers field (unless you have his express permission)

don't go in ditches or up banks! these lanes are public roads and damaging them will get them closed

we are loosing too many lanes to mindless idiots tearing them up and the bobble hatted prats who think anyone who isn't on foot should be hung by the balls
 
im fairly new on here compared to some of these but im leanring fast and it sounds like on matter what you do, as long as its respectfull to the lanes and is funny, someone is always on hand to come and help. if you get stuck then first look for the land owners, if not then make sure you can access this site from your mobile and i promise someone will help. even if its just advice. my advice is carry a high lift jack (practice with it at home 1st) and where ever possible, if you want to go out, put it on here and someone will join you and show you the ropes. just be sure if you do it wrong, you do it funny, and dont mind every single person on here knowing it!!!!!!!!!!!

ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS assume a hi-lift (or jackall etc) is either going to kill you or break your arms/face/leg/balls, because if you don't use it correctly it WILL drop your vehicle on you or that handle WILL come up and break you! a hi-lift can get you out of lots of trouble but it can and will maim or kill you

my one (4' jackall) nearly dropped a 109" s3 on me when i was lifting it out of some ruts, it slipped and took me with it, lucky i have quite good reflexes or i would have been pinned ender the rear crossmember
 
i agree, between the 2 and 4 o'clock seems safest to me but just get lots of prctice before u venture out. depends what you want to spend aswell because a winch will be invaluble to anyone venturing out alone. best advice anyone can give you, go with someone who knows the lanes and is capable of pulling you out

a winch is only as good as the the object you attach it to. In the wrong hands it's also an accident waiting to happen.
 
lets face it, anything in 4x4's is a possible accident waiting to happen, all we can do is be as safe as pos, no?
 
who aint safe???:eek::eek: oh and ratty i made that ground anchor you said about, with the angle iron and chain, tried it in an emergency rescue of my friend who has his winch fitted and it did not dissapoint!! was only a sj mind but was up past the arches and it done it a treat

Yes you are a correct.

The problem is so many people buy winches and think that simply hooking a cable on another vehicle or onto a strop wrapped around a tree is all that is required.

Even before using the winch it's essential for basic precautions such as oiling in the cable and fitting an isolator/s that is/are accessable from every position that you will be standing/sitting when using the winch.

Knowing braking strains, how to calculate resistance, how to reduce stress on the winch, ensuring even spooling on drum etc are also key in using a winch safely.

By all means get a winch. BUT make sure you KNOW how to use it safely rather than THINK you know.
