guess it is the diff then :(

I shall put the front one on and buy one of the ebay ones, pick it up on the way back to Exeter and fit ti to the front later.
 
Have you drained the diff yet to see what comes out? If the oil comes out clear (ie not metallic) its unlikely to be the diff. It is possible that the bolts holding the crown wheel have sheared, they are known to corrode if the diff is left standing with water in the bottom. If it is that I would still expect to see bits in the oil.
 
I shall try that tomorrow, rain has stopped play now, unless it brightens up later.

crown wheel bolts sounds like an easy fix
 
excellent, thx, will go for the local s1 diff and stick that on then refurb the existing diff if it is something simple like the crown wheel bolts.

had a look on the Ashcroft website at their reconditioned exchange diffs, I am sure they are top notch but I wouldn't want to lash out all that money when there are second hand ones around for £40
 
yes 4.7 is the one I need, but the local s1 diff should be ok.

3.54's would be a useful upgrade but I don't the ink the 2.286 weasel could cope with them

I’m not convinced it’s the diff as earlier you said you could drive as normal in Rear WD with handbrake on
This should mean diff ok if not it may be a 4wd issue and you’re in 4wd thinking you’re in 2wd
If selectors stuck as rob1miles suggested , An easy test for 4WD is just to jack one front wheel up , chock rear wheels, handbrake off, front wheel should spin, push down yellow knob for high4wd and wheel should not turn much, pull red lever back and watch yellow knob pop back up , push red lever forward and wheel should turn by hand , then pull red lever back for 4wdLo and wheel should lock again

i'll give that a whirl before I put it back on stands tomorrow, had to drop it down and move it back against the garage so my lad has somewhere to park when he gets back. However, when I dropped it back to the ground it seems to have stopped doing what it was doing yesterday.
 
If the landy's handbrake is on and it locks solid, then there is no way it would be able to drive, no matter what gear it was in high or low.
Unless something is broken in the transfer box
