Not so long ago the wife managed to lock the keys inside the car.....DOH.

I have now found the cause of the problem, the drivrs c/l doesnt seem to be pushing the mechanism across far enough. So when you go to open the door it manages to relock, which is a problem if the keys are inside.

I have checked and exchanged the c/l motor, tried to adjust it on the minimum mounting bracket. Lubricated the mech inside the door.

And still it self locks....

Any ideas what could be causing the problem???

I think it's still the adjustment of the actuator, undo the mounting screws and move it one way or the other, there's a fine line 1mm or so to it working or not I have had to make the holes bigger to get more adjustment.

might be the spring has gone in the lock. when you pull the handle you will see the internal knob move down a bit. the parts are cheapish off ebay and its not a major job if you have a few basic tools

Cheers Jolly,

The description you quoted is exactly what is happening.

How do I change the spring??? Not noticed this job in the haynes.

The guy who sells the springs on Ebay supplies a sheet of instructions explaining how to fit them. It is a common fault and I have had to replace four out of the five so far so I would reccomend buying a full set as you will have to replace them all soon.

I helped a friend of mine changing the spring. It is a bit fiddly but not difficult. Just make sure you make a careful note of how all the various rods/connections go BEFORE you take it to bits;).

Just done all the springs on my disco
All 5 doors as one went, then the other

Instructions are clear and easy to follow, just be aware that they are 'handed' springs, but not an issue as they come sellotaped to the instructions in small bags for the correct side

LRO last month also covered changing these springs in the "mend it " section with photo's

easy job, one hour each door start to finish inc. getting the tools out of garage and putting away on completion :)

I have a similar problem on my Discovery 2 back door, I am often unable to open it from either the outside or inside. The inside lock knob does pop up when unlocking the door, but pulling it up higher while working the inside lever does not work. Do you think this could be the spring or something else?

NO the spring issue is just D1 with a D2 any lock probs then it's usually a replacement lock, different locks you see.

Thanks, is lock failure a common problem on the D2?

May be, it does come up on various forums from time to time, they cost around £45.
I understand there's a bit of extra work to replace them, more than for the lock on a D1, that's progress for you.
