I'd agree with the above - a small van will be fine. How often is he likely to be stuck getting to work - not often I'll wager.

And the other suggestion about putting him on as a named driver (when he is really the main driver) is called fronting and is illegal.

Not going to argue with that as its true but insurance at 17 as main driver is crazy money, for me it wasnt possible money as they want £7500 on a 1.0 so was named driver but was driving less than the main driver

Oh don't get me wrong I do sympathise while my offspring were learning to drive it was OK, the minute they passed their test the insurance was insane.

Yeah well i mean im 19 next week, 1st year on polo breadvan 1.0 1986 worth £50 as a named driver was £1850! then last year disco 3.5v8 was £3k this year 3.9v8 is £1k so there is light at end of the tunnel ha

An learners insurance is stupidly cheap i think i was paying something like £50 a month ha

have a look at co-op for young drivers, my son's premium dropped from £3750 (aviva) to £1200 (coop), just for having a smart box fitted.

smart box is actually pretty good with co-op, you can go on line to check how he has been driving.

i had my first disco at the age of 17 worked fine for me carrying sound equipment and drum kit around and insurance was cheapish.
