started to get a rumbling and movement in the steering when driving at 55 plus thats got worse over the last 2 months my garage says its a problem with 1 of the drive shafts apparantly I have 4 but cant determine which one even though it happens now at 30 mph + two questions

1/ does that actually sound true!? 4 drive shafts

2/ how would they be better able to determine which one is goosed?

Its a W reg 99 I believe freelander 1.8 petrol with no modifications.

Oh and on a seperate note where can I source spare seals for the reare door as mine have gone and Land Rover say they dont know when they will get new ones in.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes there are 4 'drive shafts', basically one to each wheel.

Have they checked the simple things like wheel bearings, track rod ends or an 'egg' in a tyre side wall?

Does the rumbling and shaking happen all the time or just around corners/chaning lanes etc?

Front passenger side is a known problem shaft. Check for backlash in the CV joint. It could be going out of balance. Mine did, was a bugger to find.

Its definately worse when turning but after 30 mph+ it steadily gets worse until about 65 70 then it settles again oddly

If the garage says its a drive shaft then it more than likely going to be a front shaft. The steering issue backs this up. The passenger side shaft seems to be problematic by design. My money is here. Had my passenger side shaft completely replaced at a cost of 250 quid. Fixed the problem instantly, in fact the car is quieter now than it was when I bought it. There was backlash in the old shaft for sure. If you can detect the slightest slack in the joints of the shaft then I'm sure that is where your problem is.

Either that or your IRD is toasted. Lets not go there yet....

My garage are aleady trying to source a reconned drivers side drive shaft I spoke to the mechanic and he says theres a bit of play in that one guess I'll find out whne he replaces it.

both front drive shafts being replace for £400 drivers side is badly worn the passenger side is only slightly but may as well get it done now rather than in six months time.
