What a difference for fitting new ones!

The 2005 90 XS l just purchased drove fine but clashed and thudded on gear changes, and coming on/off the power,l thought the clutch or DMF were shot
Or maybe a diff worn out.
But removing a rear wheel to see where all the play was, revealed a drive member about to let go.
The splines on the drive shaft were also badly worn.
Fortunately my local LR specialist had parts in stock so l fitted two drive shafts and drive members, plus two front drive members (the fronts were barely worn but l changed them anyway as the caps were full of rusty powder)

What a difference, feels like a different vehicle with no noise or clunking from the transmission plus a much smoother clutch take-up.

Likewise, changed my rear half shafts two months ago and the fronts together with abs cv’s last Monday. Big difference.
 
Changed my CV's last weekend (drive members were put on a few months ago, but it's done very few miles since then) So, drive members were just about new too. Very noticeable difference. I was surprised to find no noticeable wear on the half shafts :confused: Diff end splines looked in perfect nick. CV end was a nice tight, push fit in to the CV splines. Couldn't understand it because those shafts have done 200K miles :confused: Considered myself very lucky as I was expecting to be chasing wear, through the axle, once I'd started.
 
Funnily enough I said almost the same thing on Tuesday when I put an entry on the “What have you done to your 90/110 today etc” in that I was actually disappointed as to how good a condition my ‘old’ front half shafts were having just lashed out £730 for Ashcroft HD ones. :(

That's a lot of cash :( Actually, I think I read that!
One of my brake discs was warped, so changing those was my main priority because the brake pedal was thumping something terrible. Decided to change the CV's because the splines to drive member were showing wear. Also the stub axles just because I was in there and they were very old. Was fully expecting to find wear on the half shaft splines, but thought I'll change those at another time and everything will come apart easily second time :) Still can't get over how good they were.
Why did you decide to replace your half shafts?

I thought, perhaps wrongly, that it would be a good idea to change the fronts when financially possible, and here we are.

If the rear half shaft splines were badly worn, then it was an obvious assumption to make. The thing is, it's a fair bit of work to get in there to check them. :(
 
Because I was having Ashcrofts fitted the front axle had to be stripped as they have different size seals to the oem’s. If not replaced you’d definitely have a leak. :(.
Just wondering now what to do with the HS’s from the front as they’re in good condition.

Well, they're probably genuine LR ones and you have more than 50 posts, so you could put them up for sale on here :)
Competition vehicles can snap half shafts, so anyone on here with comp Landies may well be keeping their eyes open for good, second hand shafts just to have as spares for competition day. They'll change them in the field in half an hour :)
 
Well, l fitted Britpart half shafts at £35 each. Land Rover wanted an astonishing £900 for a pair of half shafts.

The Britpart drive shafts and drive members l fitted on my 110 four years ago have so far done around 50,000 miles with no noticeable wear.

Although the 110 is only used on road as a car.

Well that's good news. I decided to fit Britpart CV joints and stub axles. First off because they were cheap. I'd read James Martin say he'd fitted loads of them because that's what customers wanted, but he didn't go on to say they were carp. Second, because it would give me first hand experience on this type of Britpart parts. Third, if they didn't last long it wasn't a great loss because of the parts cost, my labour being free!
 
It’s peace of mind for me bearing in mind what I use my truck for and, for what it’s worth they’ve a 5 yr guarantee.:eek:
 
I imagine if you are doing anything like heavy towing or off-road use, or the vehicle is modified for more power, etc
Then the Ashcroft parts are the way to go.
