My 4.6 has been using a LOT of oil since I bought it.....around a litre in 300miles.. There are no leaks since the valley gasket was changed.....I have checked. There is no smoke visible from exhausts no matter what revs and there is no smell of burning oil. My eyes and nose are in good working order.
Anyone know where it might be going? surely it shouldnt be going through this much?
Engine runs and sounds great and done 120K

Oil consumption......... 2 places leaked or burnt, seals or rings a compression test will narrow down diagnosis. My 4.0 uses on average 1/3 pint between 6,000 mile changes

Agree but there are NO leaks and no sign of it burning oil.I would expect to smell this amount of oil burning?. Compression was reported as good and even through all 8. It runs perfectly...just uses buckets of oil.
It has had work done in the past..head gaskets and sump has been off....

What grade of oil are you using?
 
mine had excactly the same problem,compression test fine, no leaks but horrendous oil consumption.i would say that the oil control rings are almost certainly worn out.:(

If that was the case he would be burning oil unless he has no sense of smell. Checking the plugs for soot maybe a good idea. :D

Only thing that does is thicken the oil up. If he is using oil the consistency of **** he could improve consumption by using an heavier grade.

Nah...tried all sorts in it...no difference.Got a tub of old axle grease lying about ..might throw that in and see if it helps.
As an aside...Im coming to uk early next month and want to buy another P38 while there. Got to be petrol with gas and in good nick..Done with old knackers (although quite happy with mine now!). Anybody know of a good one for sale? Got a decent budget for the right car.

Looks like someone is stealing your oil then if it's not leaking and not burning it. Devious buggers these Spaniards.
