Hi and what a great place this is! I've got a 96 4.0 SE. I changed the battery the other day and when I put the new battery on and started it up, within 2 min the a/c book symbol has come on! This has never happened in my ownership. All I get now is air to the screen. Before I changed the battery all the air flaps worked ok, all the a/c was ok. The book symbol now comes on everytime I start the car!! I also get a message saying alarm fault. None of these messages appeared before the battery was replaced!! What have I done wrong..........!!!

My 96 4.0 SE P38 is doing that aswell, but my answer is very simple, the A/C hoses are rotten and leaking and need replacing and then re-gassing. This is an expensive job as the A/C is in an awkward place under the bonnet and I believe certain parts need to be removed to gain access.

Also, whilst your there check your cruise control. Again after tens years that is bound to start rotting and again the CC will fail. Cheap as chips to fix and you should be able to do that yourself or at least shouldnt cost you much if you take it to a garage.

Make sure you take it to a LR/RR independent specialist. The labour costs are far cheaper than an Offical LR Dealer and thats where the main cost is.

I had to have the a/c radiator replaced. Apparently its a common fault. Take a look at the top of the ac grill where the welds are. At the left and right hand ends- top of the matrix header.- You need to take of the plastic front grill first to get a good luch of course. But that's two minute job. See if you can see any ac 'oil' stains.

I got a local a/c specialist to replace the gas with nitrogen and pressure test it. That showed up thew leak.

I may be wrong but thats my two pence worth.
Hope its of use.

Brian

A/c still cold, gassed up with no leaks.

Where is the external thermostat? Has it been displaced or broken whilst you replaced your battery?

The worse case scenario is to put it in for a TB to check. Doesnt sound like a typical battery removal error as people have pointed out, it should only affect the windows/car stereo.

If the A/C testbook symbol appears I would think something isnt quite right in the A/C electrical chain.

Sometimes the only answer is to perform a TB......which I hate doing as I begrudge LR taking my hard earned cash!

Hiya,

I have just posted a reply to a problem I had with re-fitting blend motors on my Rangie.

Once fitted with brand new motors the handbook sign came on???

I read an article with a simple little test and possible remedy which DID work for me.

Turn your ignition on and off very quickly (Without starting the engine though) and see if this clears the handbook sign. You may have to do it a few times...it took me 4 repetitions of 6.

Hope it works for you, all the best!

I dont know if anyone else has seen it, but i found an article that helps you find why the book sympol appears (accesed through rangerovers.net), just by fiddling with the a/c. I found the problem was RL7 in the fusebox, the one responsible for the left blower motor, apparently this is a very common problem caused by dirty pollen filters making the motor work harder and burning the relay. so check the relay for any burnt ones

Interesting.. Particularly as I have to replace the LHS servo shortly - got one of a chap on eBay. So I might appreciate that tip!..

I HATE that testbook icon!! fills me with doom - Still my side of the RR is lovely and warm he-he only 'er in doors now gets cold feet, so have to replace the unit as my left drum ear hurts from her 'er, "comments" ;-)
