The answer too your problem is to make a keyhole slot in the door post, weld a stiff piece of wire to a nut and put it in the slot using the wire to hold it while you tighten the bolt up

Yep i did that too and i got around it by cutting a hole and fitting a captive nut.
I used somthing that looks like this Cage Nuts - Captive Cage & Nut Assembly
But i had to do some fiddling to get it work.
