It has come to the stage where I have to replace the doors on my 110 300tdi csw. Where the bottom half meets the top half has gone! I have three options. Standard doors and flood them with paint on the inside then waxoyl. Galv doors which seem impossible to get or grp doors which seem untested?? All options are expensive unfortunately but better to do the job right! Or is there an option of sending the doors to be fixed.(. There is a 4" gap!).
Thank you for your help

I wouldn't waxoil the inside of your doors either as it won't form enough of water tight seal and it will probably just become a rust trap. A red oxide type paint or a rust preventative would be better if you can't go for galv

I bought cheap Britpart ones. Took the skins off, got the frames plastic coated, painted the skins then put them back on. Filled the tubular frame with Dinitrol. Hoping they last a long time! :)

dont waste money on red oxide ... the lead it contained that made it so good became illegal years ago (used to be known as red lead) its now no better than a poor b&q undercoat.....dinitrol (superb) ,waxoyl, por15 etc are all far better and self healing to an extent, i went for rust treatment even on new metal, hammerite and then waxoyl as hammerite uncovered is prone to chipping....

cheers steve

I sell paint for vehicles so getting plenty is not a problem. It's just what is best for money spent on the doors? Value for money? Will the britpart ones last any length of time regardless of how much paint is on them. It really is so expensive no matter what it will be at least £1100!! So it has to last. Ps don't tell the wife!

I should think they will, that is more or less what I would do, except I would red oxide and paint the frames.

I managed to get some second hand doors, passenger side was £220 complete and drivers side was £120 complete, but it has a slightly bent frame. It works perfectly, and has a really good winder etc.

I took them apart and filled the frames with dinitrol before reassembly, so far they have lasted three years, hoping for another ten or more :)

There really doesn't seem to be any cheap way around the doors, especially drivers are very hard to come by.

Don't do what I did which was to buy Doors from SP and paint them only to find you did not do your homework properly and that the ones ordered will not take the internals of old doors...

Doors still in garage whilst I scratch my head ...

NO. I put a rear one on mine about 7 years ago. Had it professionally painted. Wasn't long before if started to go. 7 years on its in tatters. :D

That's why I prepped my doors the way I did. I don't know about other makes, but the Britpart ones have bare aluminium wrapped on to bare steel. They are then painted black. When you take them apart the shiny ali and steel is there wherever they overlap. Once the water gets in - first time it rains- the dissimilar metal corrosion starts. Doesn't matter how much paint you have put on the outside. That's why I took them apart and created a barrier between them. The skins came off a hell of a lot easier than I was expecting.

I reckon this is the path I will go. I reckon it will save at least £300.
Is the skin hard to separate?

What is different about the doors?

Not really. I used a small pry bar to lift seams, then pliers to get them to 90 degrees. I had a long length of half inch dowel I planed a long thin taper on to push the skin off the frame.

This pic shows the thin line of adhesive and the bare aluminium!
