Got a minor issue on my p38. When you select reverse it dips the door mirrors. On selecting drive, the drivers door mirror does not return to it's previous position (the passenger one does).

If I manually move the mirror with the controls by the handbrake I can set it however. But, if you select reverse again, the drivers mirror again won't reset after selecting drive.

I know I disable the dip function as a workaround. But what should I be looking at to fix this issue?

That has always been an issue with the P38....it never really does work properly....

Save the frustration and just disable it.

I have had 4 P38's and they all suffered from the same thing!

Shame, so there is no common fix for it? As I say, it works perfectly on the passenger door. And the two previous p38's we had it worked perfectly on too, although to be fair, we owned them a good number of years ago, so they where a lot younger then.

I had the same problem. After manually moving it back for about 2 weeks everytime, it appears to have corrected itself and has only screwed up once since!

Mine work fine but its a poxy feature, just turn it off

How is this function turned on and off? Mine does nothing when reverse is selected.

Turn key to position 2
Put your foot on the brake pedal
Move selector to Reverse
Hold Seat Memory button for 2 secs or so
Should here a beep and dash display should say mirror dip function enabled/disabled.

Then get ones butler to put them in the correct position for you

There is no mirror dip with non electric seats.

The root cause is in the motors that actually drive the window. I had the issue on my 01 when I got it and actually pulled one of the mirrors and the motor assembly completely to bits to see if it was fixable.

Inside the motors there is a very small (and brittle) ceramic potentiometer - which is connected to the motor drive. as this turns, it sends a voltage back to the BECM (and the seat outstation - which is actually the bit that stores the mirror position as they are able to be different by seat memory). On the part that was an issue on the 2001, the ceramic potentiometer had actually worn and cracked in half - so sometimes it would work, and other times it wouldn't. And when it did work - it always went wrong.

I am investigating (slowly when I get time around rebuilding door locks and everything else I'm working on) whether any other 'memory' mirror motor units from other vehicles/manufacturers would be a direct replacement for the P38 ones as an easy (ish) solution to the problem. I did look at the time about just replacing the individual motors, and/or the ceramic potentiometer - but couldn't find either of those available on their own.
