Hello all

Anyone know what's the best way to remove the internal door handles on an 06 3 door Freelander? The rest of the door card is easy to undo (using a torx socket) but the door handles hold it in place. The handles have a plastic bit down the middle which looks like it clips in place and hides some screws but I'm not sure how to unclip it without damaging the handle.

I'm just looking at upgrading the factory speakers if you are interested...

Sorry cant help you on the door handle but if you get it off be sure to stick some r-blox sound deadening in the doors while you have the panel off - amazing difference.
 
They were by my experience. I replaced mine with some lovely Kenwood items a few years ago and the difference was AMAZING.
 
The factory speakers have paper cones = sh!te

I want to put some nice ones in. Don't know which type yet but there are plenty out there. They will be more powerful and sounds heaps better than the standard ones...

Don't know whether MY06 is the same as my MY01 but my doorhandles are attached with two Philipsscrews on the underside. See picture. Or do you mean something else with doorhandles ? If yes, sorry.

Also think to remember to have read, many moons ago, that the size of the speakers used by LR are rather special, they don't match all the available speakers, check, especially on the depth (to avoid the cone touches the outside door body plate) and the fixingholes position before buying

They are different to that. There is a strip of plastic which looks like it is clipped in place down the centre of the handle. I guess that it just needs pulling out, but I'm not sure the best way to do it without damaging it. I tried putting a small screwdriver in there but I could see the plastic getting scratched.

Hi Benny,

Thanks but I'm afraid the picture is the best of help I can be for you, but since it is a MY06 you have plenty of warranty left so why not going to see your dealer and see what he has to say about ?? Just pay him a courtesy visit and ask how these handles stick together ??
 
I think the later models have smaller speakers to the likes of my Mk1. You can fit a sub in each of the doors on the earlier models the holes are that big!
Remember though - if you have tweeters fitted to the doors as standard - the wiring is shared with the main speaker so the wattage is halved. Something to think about when matching the rating.

If you have one with the aluminum style handle, put a small screwdriver on the bottom art of the aluminum style piece and pry it loose, then there are 3 screws to remove under the trim, 2 at the bottom of the door and one in the door handle and 2 more one at each end of the door pocket. The pry but be careful no to break the clips
 
I took my handles off to repair my speakers, and i couldnt find a way to do it without slightly damaging the plastic.
Unfortunately i had to use a small screwdriver, left a small indent but im sure that i will have to take them off again at a later date (being as it is a freelander) so i would use the same point again.
you have to be quiet forcefull when doing it and i couldnt find another way, without doing a small amount of damage.In fact taking the plastic out took longer than stripping the rest of the door card,lots of head scratching before taking the plunge and literally popping it out.
One last thing i suggest you use 2 screwdrivers, 1 to get the initial movement and another to pop it.
