Help!

I have a 1988 Defender 90 soft top with two piece doors and sliding windows. My left hand internal door catch has broken. I tried to buy a new one but they are apparently not made any more. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do? I am getting a little sick of opening my window every time I want to open my door !

Below is a picture of the offending piece and the replacement that I was sent (which obviously doesn't fit!)

Thanks in advance,

Mike

you did well to get the replacement that you have that one fits mine, early 90 pre defender.

I couldn't find one to buy anywhere eventually got 1 fabricated and then put the old linkage back on.

Can you not take swap the linkage or is it thelinkage that is broke

Unfortunately it is the little bar that holds the linkage that has broken. You can just see it in this photo (the bronze coloured part). The bar and link in the replacement part is not interchangable :-(

I may have to take the thing apart and try to get someone to fabricate a new metal bar.

Bit leftfield but could you swap the door lock/handle for a series version and do away with the door card and broken handle mechanism

That inner handle is for an early 90/110 with windup windows.
Iv not seen that arrangement on your door. Most would just have lift up handles.
Do you have door cards ?
Thanks

Thanks for the comments/thoughts, most appreciated!

I seem to have quite a rare door configuration?
I do indeed have door cards. This is a picture of the door card and catch.
Swapping for a series handle and door cards might work but I'm not sure if the catch is the same? I can take a more detailed photo if that would help?

Rare door....not seen any like this
So can you remove the flat bar & replace with the old rod?
Handle looks the same in the picture.

Guys, something in the back of my mind thinks these are Morris Marina internal door locks. They were used across a myriad of vehicles, are still readily available from Marina, MGB and Mini suppliers and are cheap as chips.

eta: though may be barking up wrong tree

I'm pretty sure you're right - same door handle in lots of old british vehicles - the MGB one looks identical. I can vouch for the fact that the outer trim is the same - the part number even matches!

Believe might also be found in a sherpa van..

I had a quick search when i broke mine round our local scrap yards and gave up, got on fabricated in metal for MOT having driven it for months and opened the window to open the outside handle..lol

Swapped the fabricators labour for use of our workshop ramp over a weekend...top result love a bit of barter

That is a very unusual door card i must say looks a bit of a cross between a series and an early 90 /110
