Hi, how do I know if my Freelander TD4 sport has a dpf? It is a MK1 2006. I have been using it as a second car for a couple of years and it only does short journeys now mostly with a trailer attached to pick up building materials. I think it needs a long run and an additive to clear out the filter if it has one as I get the emissions warning light come on when I first start up the engine. It goes off after a few miles but seems to stay on a bit longer each time I use the car.

As you don't have one buy a good diesel injector cleaner, tip the lot in the tank, mix with quality fuel and take her for a nice long drive.

No. Just a decent diesel engine cleaner.
However if you're getting a light, then it's best get the codes read. The ECU can't identify is blocked cat, like a DPF equipped vehicle. So something is up, or the light wouldn't be coming on.
 
EGR is most likely sticking remove and clean it out, also the manifold, and the MAP sensor, check the vacuum hoses from the EGR.
 
Hi, the problem with the warning light has now developed into a problem with the entire instrument panel. No dials working at all and no warning lights showing. I did a check on the EGR and it was fine. I have checked the fuses, the wiring behind the dash and the earth connection at the base of the A pillar on the drivers side all of which seem ok. As the emissions light was the start of the problem, could it still be something to do with the MAF sending a signal to the management system that has affected the instrument panel? I am thinking of buying one of those cheap diagnostic devices to give me a clue as to what the problem could be. I am in darkest rural France and finding someone who has any more knowledge than me ( close to zero) of the ins and outs of Freelander electronics would be tricky. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
 
It could potentially be the dash itself or the ABS ECU. I'd start with finding a second hand replacement dashboard.

If you didn't solve the original warning light problem, then a diagnostic device will hopefully show what's causing the light.
 
The dash has a pcb I noticed when I took it out to look at the connections. Would it be worth replacing this first or do they no go wrong ( the pcb)?

Also, would a diagnostic check show if it was the dash itself or maybe something else?

I'd just replace the whole assembly as it saves messing about and potentially damaging one of the gauges.

I would depend on the diagnostic equipment used I guess. Not all diagnostic equipment will read Ipack (dashboard) errors.
