its always made the back a little black but it does seem to be getting worse.

That's awful! Your engine must be knackered!



Unless it's a diesel, in which case it's probably fine, but you might want to invest in expensive diesel every third tank.
 
I think the engine is knackered, an old 2.286 weasel, always been smokey, if it wasn't for exemption I doubt it would pass the emissions test.

I have been sticking some of that redex stuff in recently
 
Looks normal to me, give any 2 1/4 some welly and it will push out some black smoke. How long did it take to build up that stain ?

it was this time last year when I sprayed it grey, but iirc that part of the body was pretty black after about about 3 months
 
Well then I would say it is OK. Old landy 2 1/4 engines do not have modern stuff like EGR [ exhaust gas recirculation ] or particulate filters. the most you get on later ones is crankcase gas recirculation. Put an extension on the pipe past the body a couple of inches or angled for down .
 
I second the use of an angled extension. I put one on mine just to get the filthy diesel fumes further away from the cab and prevent any being sucked in, it really helped. And if you point it down you won't see the colour and not worry about it.
