I want to lift the suspension to get bigger tyres in so I need the lift of the air springs. Although as the vehicle will basically be raised 1.5 - 2 constantly. It probably going to be better off on coils

And totaly unstable on the road, just the sort of thing that ought to be stopped by the new EU wide directive on modifying vehicles IMO.

What's with all this huge tyre guff?
Upgrading to a 245/75 16 or 255/60 18 all terrain is enough for most off road applications without compromising the on road characteristics?
If you're going laning and need big mud terrain tyres then surely the lane is unsuitable to be driven and you'll only add to the damage?
Besides, as I've discovered on a mates farm the other day it's quite remarkable where a standard P38 will go if you're sensible ;)

Whatever happened to GORDON? I think that he was somebody's other half and he off-roaded a P38 quite successfully.
After our leader, in a Defender (sorry Dom, couldn't resist it), had to drop out I ended up following him around the chippie run. Apart from some serious tyres and a distinct smell of chip fat from his exhaust he didn't have any obvious modifications but he seemed quite happy just pointing it at the countryside and going for it.

Im after large tyres to get more clearance. Will be a second car so happy to have some compromise. But its going to be my play thing as such, fo pay an play sites as well as green lanes.

Well good luck to you, don't forget to declare all the mods to your insurance company ;)

If you want a good mod. Forget all the normal "offroad" essentials. Get yourself some ARB airlockers (they do make them for P38s). You'll need a fair few quid to get a set shipped over the the US of A, but they alone will make the world of difference. The open diff rely on traction control method LR used was completely daft. I've seen a fair few P38s with lockers and they are a completely different animal. Worth the expense if you plan on seriously offroading it.

If you don't want full lockers a LSD would make a huge difference in itself... if anyone ever made LSDs for P38s.

Air is way better than coil, it will even go above wading height to get you out of trouble if you ground it. For real serious stuff, Arnott Gen III's give an extra 2" of articulation.
The EAS is perfectly reliable if well maintained.
What triggers the extra lift when you ground it .switch/air pressure difference?
Always wondered what triggered it...

The System will detect a height sensor reading at the upper end of the scale...it will then try and deflate that spring and see if it sees a change in height...if it doesn't it considers the vehicle grounded out and will then reinflate that spring and then all the others to raise the vehicle up by 20mm above the usual extended ride height to try and unground itself.....

As attached from the Manual....

Talk to 996Turbo.

Also, if you want to wade then Rick The Pick has moved BECMs up to the roof lining in the boot, I believe.

Oh, and bung a Tirfor winch in the boot with a decent length of cable, just in case!

i go green laning in mine regular all i do is spray height sensors with wd40 type spray to repel the water and run a set of standard mud tyres it goes were all the other moded vehicles go its all standard apart from terrafima shocks all round and rear bumper trimmed, they cross axle and have good articulation it is more than capable as a off road vehicle if you are going to do deep water crossings make sure that your door seals are good :D if you need more height just adjust the eas with the software available of the net :D

well said no need for huge tyres

Im unsure of the dislike of larger tyres. Im looking at larger but not huge. An its for a reason which your a atar actually highlights. To get more clesrance under the diff.

This will protect the vehicle an the ground your travelling over. Which is very important on grean lanes. The larver rubber will also allow lower pressures an hence largerr footprint lower ground pressure an hence not leaving tracker marks lkke so many do. Im also lucky to be not far from being rocky trails. Where the larger tyres at lower pressures will assist mobility and reduce damage.

Im not gunna stick it on 35"rubber. I dont want a monster truck. But im happy to compromise some aspects of the vehicle to achieve my aims of a better offroad capable vehicle.

If you want to play modifying, you would be better off with a series or an old Defender.

I like P38's for some unknown reason. An having spent my fair share of times in the above, i would rather walk... Plus, 4K for a 1987 ****e box, no thanks.... AN a disco 2, dont even get me started. i dont feel that a 2000+ car should have to be inspected for rust when buying. Not just check the wheel arches etc.. Is the thing falling apart!!!!

Plus, a P38 offroader is different, an eyebrow raising. Nice to stick a couple up at the doubters occasionally.

P38 is an incredibly capable vehicle, with some of its capabilty reduced to allow it to be great around chelsea.. I dont live in chelsea an its a second car.. So, i can reduce the compromise in some areas to up it in others..
