Does anyone know what the screw hole on the underside of the manual gearbox is for on a 96 300TDi.

My Disco has the nut missing and today in the garage someone pointed it out and said it was the transmission fluid drain which I dont think it is as its had the nut missing for some time and would have blown up already if it was.

To try and describe where it is better, its on the gearbox and near the engine oil sump and nut. In fact the last time I changed my engine oil I unscrewed the sump nut and screwed the nut into this hole to keep safe. i thought to myself what a nice idea of Land rover to place such a convienient screw hole.
But now I dont think it is for that, i think it serves a purpose.

According to Haynes manual it could possible be the extension housing drain plug. But im not sure.

The Nut hole fits the engine oil nut perfect so hopefully you know what size hole it is.

Any ideas and what should I do about this.

Thanks.

its yer wading bung hole. yer put a plug in it when wading to stop HB's muddy **** getting into yer bell housing. and leave it out fer normal driving so any oil can drain out.

I cant do pics, its to cold to be outside on the floor but I think Slob has got it. Im pretty sure thats what it is.

Thanks.
