Looks like it could be a breather from axle or gearbox, they just come up and have a bend going down open end ,they are a ridged plastic about 6mm.

hi wammers yes unfortunately it does look a right state but it didn't when it went in garage and they used three fire extinguiers to put it out but before garage it was in daily use with no problems

Nasty. It does look a state.

Can you not follow it down? Think Brian might be right but hard to tell with that!

Rusted up fast, didn't it? Never seen a mess that bad. Do you live near the sea?

the pipe disappears into the bulkhead ive now cut the burnt bit off and nothing comes out of it so a breather pipe is more than probable no I don't live near the sea it spent quiet a time at a garage who told me they had been starting it up but I beg to differ ive cleaned the engine up and will try dw40 on the rust but just need to renew ht leads again and then put battery back on

Disappears into the bulkhead?

I cannot remember what the petrol engine looks like. Does the pipe for the cruise control go through there? Does the cruise control work?

There is from memory a small vac pipe for the CC that goes to the brake pedal......iirc.

That sounds about right as it disappears it to bulk head, as the breathers just go down to tunnel area in engine bay.

Although if the end coming out of the dash is melted off, the other end must be open somewhere so presumably theres a vac leak meaning no cruise at all and running rough?

Won't affect running but cruise won't work.

Do they run a vac pump on the patrols then? I'm used to vac on petrols being taken from the inlet manifold, meaning any vac leak is a leak of unregulated air downstream of the MAF sensor normally resulting in rough running.
