every now and again whilst braking it's as though the anti lock brakes are on even when the road is dry, you have to press the pedal harder and then the brakes come on hard, anyone know what could be causing this, cheers

It might help if you tell us what vehicle. Is it fitted with ABS? I would start my investigations at the master cylinder, Have you checked the fluid? It sounds as though the primary brake circuit is faulty and its the secondary circuit that is kicking in.

it's a p reg 300tdi es model, yes it's fitted with abs, the fluid level is ok, what shall i look for on the master cylinder?

does pedal feel hard to push or a pulsing in pedal first lack of vacuum in servo or pump or pipe between

the pedal is not hard to push as such but it does pulse like it's skidding, nearly rammed an ambulance when it first did it, scared me to death lol, but you can push it through this pulsing but then you do an emergency stop, it only does it every now and then not all the time, cheers

Is the ABS working properly? When you turn the ignition on the warning light should come on, then go out then come back on. When you drive off it should go out when you go a bit over walking pace.

If it does anything other than this then you either have a fault at the moment or you have a stored fault from the past. Either way, if it isn't working properly then do some searching on here for "ABS" and "paperclip" to find out how to diagnose the fault.
