hi got in my defender this morning and drove a good 20 miles away from home, stopped then left it for an hour or so when i tryed to start it i just get a single click from a relay near the fuses and nothing else. I gave it a tap and wiggle and still nothing ! Two hours and a recovery truck later and im still a bit puzzled by it all ?????? Can anyone lead me in the right direction any advice more than welcome.

First off try wiggling the fly lead on the starter motor. If that doesn't work, check the lead is turning live when the ignition is turned to the crank position.

Strangely enough I was about to ask almost the same question, my 90 has been fine for a few weeks since I bought it. Jacked it up to have a look behind the wheels today (not pretty ) and once back on the ground again have the same clicking you mention.

Quick search through the archives points to earthing problems or solenoids (whatever they are), off to dig out the Haynes manual but will keep an eye on this thread as well.

Earths - especially the battery -ve terminal and engine to chassis straps always worth removing, cleaning and retightening

Also check the connections to the back of the starter motor

If these are all OK, next step usually starter solonoid, or less frequently the ignition switch itself

Vearon, if you search the Defender forum for "Earth Strap" there are loads of topics. Looks like my problem is related to the fact I had both the battery contacts off to remove a wiring loom for an amplifier.
