Evenin!

Changed the oil in the Gearbox of my 110 at the weekend, and this came out. The plug was covered in crap and looks like an exploding volcano or Denis the menace in profile..

I've no idea when the last time the oil was changed, but that doesn't look very good. Have done around 100 miles in it since, and it (the gearbox) feels a bit notchy, but apart from that ok. What do you lot think? Is that ok (well, perhaps not ok, but not too bad?). Have done this before, but never seen that much swarf & grindings collected on a sump plug!

Am going to do the transfer box next.......

Cheers
Ken

Thats a bugger. Perhaps a trip to halfords for that "Shut the fek up Gearbox" paste will be required then.... I'll run it some more and see how bad things get. Hopefully, changing the oil to synthetic (Castrol SMX-S) will give it a hand. Any other additive I can throw in?
cheers
K

Ooooooh thats a bit steep! do I just put one in, or is it to replace the SMX-S stuff completely?

I've seen worse kennymac, notibly on the wifes Rover bubble (this is not a double entendre) Wouldn't worry to much. You've changed the oil which would have been my only advice.
Regards
Otto

Cheers otto, Got a trip up the A9 (thats not a double entendre either!) soon so no doubt any problems will come to light in the worst possible place! What really freaked me out was the diameter of the magnet (about the same thickness on the shaft of a straw), where as the swarf etc. was many many times that in thickness!

Being a Licensed Aircraft Engineer we get a lot of this on the aircraft engines,
it is usually excess carbon in the oil which is magnetic and nothing to worry about,it means the oil hasn't been changed often enough or has been overworked, bit of a worry on aircraft but nothing to worry about on a Landy.
look for metal particles i.e. swarf, if there is none present you have nothing to worry about,

I pulled this out this afternoon! I have sent a copy to Ashcrofts as this was the first oils change since their rebuild 32,000 miles ago... Should I be worried??

First pic not the end of the world just change the oil again in a couple of thousand miles and see whats on the bung then.
Second pic oh dear thats defo something to worry about!

If you have a weak synchro on 2nd gear dont use the syn oil as it will make it worse.

i be worried you should have had 4 oil changes in that time, clean the big bits up and take a better pic

As he didn't say which box the oil came from and his indifference to the interval, I'm a little dubious as to his 'blaming' Ashcrofts ...

After all they do autos, manuals, transfers and diffs, he didn't say if he was first owner of a re-built unit or what ?

If it were your work, you'd be curious too ...

.... so it's not 40,000 between gearbox oil changes?... R380/TD5... it's been refilled with MTF94... was running fine... now I wonder what can of worms I have opened...

Yes Dave at Ashcrofts is on the case... got back straight away... it was why I chose them for the rebuild... I never thought to keep the bits, as he said he could have probably identified where they came from! ... hoping he can put my mind at ease... or offer a solution...

solution is a strip down of the box
