I have, touch wood, never failed to get home. So yep, i trust mine. Although it does require quite a lot of maintenance. . . ;)
Main thing is i'm amazed how long it will run until something fails. I've had a few parts need replacement due to worn components, but they've always hung on ages.
Only big thing i've had to do on the roadside was removed a shattered CV (didn't take me by surprise. . .). But got home no problem in Diff-lock.

In the 8 months and 11000 miles I have done in my defender I can only report good things, trust is earned and it's doing very well, maintainence is key :)

I wouldn't give it a second thought that my Defender might breakdown. It never has and I don't think it ever will. Its maintained as it should be. I do 5000 miles between servicing and wouldn't think about looking under the bonnet. Not bad for a 22 year old vehicle that still puts a smile on your face whenever you drive it and people still admire. I was working outside a shop a month ago and it was parked up against a BMW X5. It was noticeable all the guys, girls and kids were eyeing up the Defender as they went by and never gave the BM a second glance. I met some people down in the South of France whilst on holiday last year. A woman came up to me and said she had seen the Defender around my home town which was some 500 miles away. Now you wouldn't get that from owning a car.

the adventure is in the journey not the arrival. i do sometimes wonder if it will get me some where, even just a few miles away, but it always does. the one i have now has been reliable with only a few issues that were easily fixed which were age related. so do i trust it? not really. will i drive it every day and tow heavy things? damn yes. do i carry a tool kit? hell yes. does it put a smile on my face and will i always have one? abso-fu**ing-lutley.

Haha my feelings exactly, I would never be without mine!

130K on the clock 94 300tdi d90 and would trust it to get me anywhere any distance straight away. i often do 500 miles round trip some weekends on motorways 70 - 75 mph apart from the hole in the wallet from fuel prices i love it and been really reliable yes things break on them but if well mainteined you know when things are wearing out etc as other have said.
