bit of a novice question but I have a passenger side headlight out and I can't seem to see anywhere how I could physically take the bulb out to replace it I've searched and it seems that these or sealed headlight units is it then correct that I would have to buy a brand new head light for the sake of a bulb thansk
 
They look awful mine or clear and don't have the lines on them but I can't see how I can change the bulb they have sidelights in them also but they have never worked how would I tell if I could change the bulb or if it is actually sealed

What vehicle do you have?
 


If you've got the headlight itself out, and unplugged the wiring, and there's no bulb to remove, it's a sealed beam. Either buy a new sealed beam unit, or change it to halogens as per my previous post.

Sealed beams look like this:

Your possibly looking at the outer metal holder. Have you opened it at the front as per the picture?
 
Look at the youtube video, take the lamp out from the front. There's a bowl behind the headlamp, you can't get to the bulb / sealed beam that way.
 
Sealed beams aren't so easy to get hold of nowadays, and they have the downside that you have to replace the entire lamp unit. Best to upgrade to halogens as you'll see a distinct improvement. You do need to do both sides if you go down this route, though if one light unit has failed chances are the other is on its way too.
 
Tbh if you can stretch to it...upgrade to LED. My God they are superb. I have always struggled with night driving, in any vehicle that doesn't have really bright headlights...not just Landies. Full beam...not a problem...dipped beam against other traffic...nightmare, especially in bad weather. The LEDs don't dim that much on low beam which I find fantastic. And I'm winching in rivers quite often so the waterproofness is great. And they can handle a bang or 2. Just watch what you buy...a lot being sold are actually not as bright as you would expect. Go onto the direct from China sites and buy the e marked dot approved ones. You will find every single one sold here in UK for a fraction of price direct from China....where they all seem to be made...and they are very well made. For example I found every eBay set with an hour. Its a really worthwhile investment. My Defender headlights make my wife's car look like its lit by a paraffin lamp!!!
